Hyde Name Origins.

The name "HYDE" is derived from the hide, a measure of land for taxation purposes, taken to be that area of land necessary to support a peasant family. In later times it was taken to be equivalent to 120 acres .

I am lucky to have here with me now a copy of James Leigh's book... Gleams Of Sunshine.. His poetry is a must for any Hydonian. There is a wealth of local history within its pages and it shows that over 100 years ago Hydonians felt the need to make a note of their past.
Nancy and myself are trying to do something similar here, maybe not as poetic as James Leigh, but we have the advantage of his work and the books by Thomas Middleton.... namely 'The Annals Of Hyde', and of course the many photographs taken in the last centry. If we can just build up a simple collection of pictures and memories that can be seen and enjoyed by others then I think I speak for both Nancy and myself when I say it is our pleasure to spend the time it takes doings so... Enjoy :O)
