The name "HYDE" is derived from the hide, a measure of land for taxation purposes, taken to be that area of land necessary to support a peasant family. In later times it was taken to be equivalent to 120 acres .

The Werneth Pub
Two shots of the Werneth Pub on Stockport Road.
Sadly, this pub is up for sale yet again. I hope it doesn't go the way that so many pubs in Hyde have over the years and close its doors...
Now this would certainly be a sad one to lose... I've so many memories attached to this pub and the people I've know that have drank there...
I'm sad to say that The Bay Horse in Newton as now shut down, it looks so sad to see it boarded up.. The last time Jane and myself were up there was to have a drink with Nancy and Dunc.. whilst watching a friend play in his band.
unfortunatly its a sign of the times people are staying in now with cheap beer at home its a shame as these pubs were always full of characters and you always had a good night out lets hope they stay open and not end up as houses or shops or even demolished
My dad's old watering hole! Be a shame to see it go, but it hasn't really moved with the times, has it? It looks exactly the same now as it did in the 50s when I passed it every day on the way to school. Good memories though of the young Cephas Howard with the Temperance Seven.
Oh that's harsh. I don't think they're a blot on the landscape but the Queen Ad is a bit rowdy sometimes. I think the Werneth has had its day but it holds many good memories for so many folk of GX of a certain age.
Always good to start off in the werneth, then onto somewhere else if you could drag your self away from what i remember was always a quality pint!! good pub, good ale.possibly good bye. Some one buy it please...come on Tom,you know you want to!!!!!
If you have any pictures, stories, memories, or items from or about Hyde and you would like to share them here with other like minded Hydonians please get in touch with us. Either leave us a comment or even better email us:
Tom, Dave, Paul and I would like to say thank you to everyone for contributing to this blog in some small way - even if that means just reading it! It's been more of a success than we could ever have dreamt of and that's all down to you ! It was our intention to get Hyde "on the record" as it were and it seems to be heading in the right direction. We are very proud of Hyde and would like it's history to live on!

Hope I've seen the last of the Werneth, and I only hope the Queen Ad will soon follow. Both places are a blot on the landscape.
