The name "HYDE" is derived from the hide, a measure of land for taxation purposes, taken to be that area of land necessary to support a peasant family. In later times it was taken to be equivalent to 120 acres .

The Bricklayers
A photo looking down Reynold Street showing the Bricklayers Pub.
It is the white building on the extreme left.
Another of our "lost" pubs, of which there are too many now.
Dave took this picture of the Bricklayers Arms when it was still recognisable as an ex-public house.
I've not got a photo of the Bricklayers when it was still a going concern but I've got one of it which I took just before demolition which I'll send to you.
I got a good ticking off from my Dad when somebody split on me for going in the Bricklayers for a few pints when I was under age. My Dad said that the clout was not for drinking under age it was because I could have got the landlord in trouble. I soon found watering holes further afield. Happy days!
If you have any pictures, stories, memories, or items from or about Hyde and you would like to share them here with other like minded Hydonians please get in touch with us. Either leave us a comment or even better email us:
Tom, Dave, Paul and I would like to say thank you to everyone for contributing to this blog in some small way - even if that means just reading it! It's been more of a success than we could ever have dreamt of and that's all down to you ! It was our intention to get Hyde "on the record" as it were and it seems to be heading in the right direction. We are very proud of Hyde and would like it's history to live on!
