The name "HYDE" is derived from the hide, a measure of land for taxation purposes, taken to be that area of land necessary to support a peasant family. In later times it was taken to be equivalent to 120 acres .

Mottram (new) Road - Then and now !
A postcard showing Mottram Road.
Not a lot has changed.
Walked up & down this road plenty of times as a lad. From Hyde to the oaklands.
There used to be a pub on the left, going up, I think it was called the "Barrington" unless my memory fails me. I also remember there were a few "listed" houses on that road. Happy to note some things remain as nice as they used to.
I was disgusted to learn that they took the lovely old wrought iron bus stops from Hyde market and melted them down. Are they totally insane on that council?
Nobody has mentioned 'Sober Row'. That long terrace of houses with the built in plaque that says something like ... "Be industrious, be sober" I think the correct name for the row of houses is 'Temperance Terrace'.
If you have any pictures, stories, memories, or items from or about Hyde and you would like to share them here with other like minded Hydonians please get in touch with us. Either leave us a comment or even better email us:
Tom, Dave, Paul and I would like to say thank you to everyone for contributing to this blog in some small way - even if that means just reading it! It's been more of a success than we could ever have dreamt of and that's all down to you ! It was our intention to get Hyde "on the record" as it were and it seems to be heading in the right direction. We are very proud of Hyde and would like it's history to live on!
