Hyde Name Origins.

The name "HYDE" is derived from the hide, a measure of land for taxation purposes, taken to be that area of land necessary to support a peasant family. In later times it was taken to be equivalent to 120 acres .

I wonder if any of them are still in existence?

I learned to drive with Willamson's around 1963/64. I seem to recall that their car was a Triumph Herald and lessons were 15 shillings an hour. Gee Cross was the ideal practising place for hill starts!

Looking at Smith"s advert, I don't think you would be dealing in 2nd hand guns and swords these days!

Happy memories - thank you.

Yes it was a Triumph Herald, the fins on the back were a great help, if you lined one of them up with the kerb when reversing round corners you always got it right
