Union Street Church Football Team.

The following was sent to us by Alan Bell in regards to our appeal for Union Street Church's exhibition.

Over to Alan....

"I read with interest about Union St. church celebrating its 200th year. You asked for any information or photographs about the football club there. The attachment is a picture of the 1960-61 football team after we had won the cup in the picture. The final was played on Hyde United's ground and Union St. won 3-2. My name is Alan Bell and I am 3rd from left on the back row.Can anybody help me by filling in the rest of the names all I can remember is John Holt on the back row and I think it is Arthur Chesworth Holding the cup.
Yours Alan Bell."

That would have been the junior team at the time, and I can recognise Lincoln Delve, Bob Pritchard, Stewart Taylor, Ian Carter, Arthur Chesworth and maybe Roy Smith. The three men are: Mr Kay on the left, Mr Prior and Fred Carter who is on the far right. It was Fred who founded the team in 1957 and was an inspiration throughout its successful history. By the early 60's the first team would probably be playing in the Stockport League after winning the old Mottram Deanery and then the Ashton leagues. After winning promotion through all the Stockport divisions Union Street FC joined the Manchester Amateur League where they also went though all the divisions to become champions of Division One. They also won numerous Challenge cups including the one off Glossop Centenary Cup when they beat Oldham's Batteries in the final.

Hi, I can tell you that the young man on the back row, fourth from the left is my cousin Lincoln Delve. He works at Manchester United, coaching the youngsters these days despite being a City fan.

Barry in Oz. Arthur Chesworth has lived in Adelaide, South Australia for many years. He continued his football career playing for Adelaide Juventus, a top tier side, full of Italian born players. Arthurs name on the field changed to 'Arturo'.

Hi, I can confirm 4th from the left on the back row is my dad Lincoln Delve. He still talks about the good old days and how good that team was. We're now in our 17th season with mufc and enjoying like our first and now seeing the fruits of our work with Tom Thorpe (Manchester united) Zach Clough (bolton wanderers ) Dylan Forth (Aston Villa) to name few. Great picture by the way.
