Even when you're 'Up' in the Capital there's an expression which alludes to the 'posh' part of London - when people going for a night out go 'Up West'.Dave Williamsnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8599481671908734427.post-40383132847328003452011-10-27T09:47:58.043+01:002011-10-27T09:47:58.043+01:00Uptown Girl - Billy Joel!Uptown Girl - Billy Joel!Werneth Lownoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8599481671908734427.post-61073555070468053242011-10-26T10:38:00.330+01:002011-10-26T10:38:00.330+01:00Petula Clark had a record in the 1960s entitled &#...Petula Clark had a record in the 1960s entitled 'Downtown'. Never heard of a song, or an expression of any kind come to that, called 'Uptown'. How did the railways decide the 'up' and 'down' lines on routes which went East-West and vice-versa, like Liverpool to Leeds for instance?Dave Williamsnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8599481671908734427.post-75658033014859739172011-10-26T02:08:06.702+01:002011-10-26T02:08:06.702+01:00Also interesting, Dave, and a reminder of one of t...Also interesting, Dave, and a reminder of one of the lessons learned in my first job at Gorton Locomotive Works {Gorton Tank}, that pn this country's rail network the UP main line is always the one which travels towards London, regardless of where you are geographically. Not sure if this has anything to do with going 'down Hyde' but we also used to go 'down Manchester' which liess slightly west of Hyde!Werneth Lownoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8599481671908734427.post-6931823260077212072011-10-25T10:49:22.775+01:002011-10-25T10:49:22.775+01:00The point about going 'Down Hyde' is inter...The point about going 'Down Hyde' is interesting, as it's what I always say as it is downhill from where I live. I remember having a 'discussion' with a southern-born girl with whom I worked many years ago who took me to task when I talked about 'going down to London'. 'No', she said, 'you go UP to London, because it's the Capital'. 'But we're up North, and London's down South'. 'That doesn't matter', she said, 'London's the Capital, and you go UP to the Capital'. 'In that case', I said, 'I'll go DOWN to Brighton, and call in on London on the way'.Dave Williamsnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8599481671908734427.post-88097592702721301062011-10-25T07:57:02.081+01:002011-10-25T07:57:02.081+01:00Werneth Low....
