The Lumm (Lumn) 1836. Note the fields around the building - so much open space. Also note Ewen Fields ,the home of Hyde United Football Club, is documented as Owen Fields! I'm proud to say that I'm connected in some way to this old building.

The Lumn was the home of the Shepley family. It was probably the oldest dwelling in the area and the only one to boast a chimney - hence the name "The Lumn". It was purchased from Sir Uryan Legh in 1612. Sir Uryan Legh was , according to the Annals of Hyde , "a warrior of considerable fame",who was knighted for his leadership at the siege of Cadiz , when the city was taken in 1590.
All that's left of the Lumn - A plaque on Lumn Road houses just up from St Thomas's Church.
I've never spotted that one before Nancy.. It show how the town as change so much in the last 100 years. When you think of some of the building which were pulled down.... now they would be listed as historic sites.
ReplyDeleteI've heard a lot about the Lumn (or Lumm as it's sometimes referred to). I wish I had more information and photos of the house and land. It was one of the oldest buildings in the area and I bet it had some stories to tell over the years!
