The Cheshire Cheese stands on the corner of Ashton Old Road and Bennett Street in Newton, Hyde. There were until resently 3 pubs in Hyde with this name... the one on Market Street is no longer a pub.. this one seems to be hanging in there. I wish it luck.
Cheshire Cheese seems quite a common name for a pub and not just in Cheshire ..

ReplyDeleteI wonder if there are any pubs named Red Leicester or Canadian Cheddar ?
Can you imagine a pub called the Edam or Gouda ?
That's it now ...
There is another in the SK14 postcode area - at Broadbottom
ReplyDeleteBroadbottom.... I've had a pint or two in there many many moons again..
ReplyDeletePetrus, I admire the thinking behind the pubs named after cheeses.... I have tried to think of any others and can't... I'll take a look on Google if I get the chance..
I am researching my family tree that has strong roots in the Newton / Hyde area. Does anyone have any memories or further information about the "J Cooper" butcher's shop shown in the old photograph of The Cheshire Cheese? The shop now forms part of the pub but I'm pretty sure that the "J Cooper" sign eventually found it's way onto my own father's butcher's shop that was in Clarendon place in the 1970's - 1980's. Sadly, my father passed away a number of years ago so he can't help. He would have loved your web site and would no doubt have contributed stories of his childhood, growing up living in his grandfather's ironmongers shop on Newton Street & of his school days at Flowery Field.
ReplyDeleteThanks to anyone that can help!

does anyone know the name of the pub on the opposite corner to the Cheshire cheese (Bennett st./ Ashton rd.)for the life of me I cannot find nor remember the name.
ReplyDeleteAs a youngster lived at 63 Ashton rd.1956/1963 then we moved to Godley.
Hi there. I was born at 72 Ashton Road in 1946 and lived there till I was 17. I only remember the Cheshire Cheese pub with Coopers butchers next door. On the opposite corner (Talbot Road) was the Co op. I think on the Bennett Street corner was a Hardware Shop. My cousins were Adrian and Neil Crompton do you remember them. We all went to Flowery Field School!

DeleteI used to frequent the Newton pubs in my younger days, as I used to live at 3, Duke Road in Newton.
ReplyDeleteI used to work as a joiner for R Whipp builders in Gee Cross, and we had a ongoing contract with Robinsons Brewery to renovate and build new pubs for them The Cheshire Cheese being one of their pubs, I worked there on many occasion.
