Two pictures of the PSA building, which stood on Market Street just before the junction with Union Street. These pictures along with others were donated to the blog by Jack Cheetham of Newton. Jack is a wealth of imformation and a true gentleman in every sense of the word. Watch out for more from Jack as I'm sure it will be of interest to many.
I've sat on those benches more than once.... most likely waiting for the Cheshire Cheese to open... I recall them being well used on Saturdays when they would be full of people chatting and passing the time of day. Getting a Taxi back from Hyde with your shopping was unheard of not that many years ago.... benches such as these came in handy when walking up Market street with a few bags of shopping.
ReplyDeleteI've sat here many times too ,Tom. Do you remember the bus stop that used to be here, also? Now you have to go from the Market right up to nearly opposite the Shepherds Call pub before you come to another bus stop. Kind of defeats the object a little. There used to be a bus stop outside Norths factory too...just to take the workers home ,I bet. The hedges dont seem that tall around the PSA anymore. I remember them seeming huge to me - maybe I was just tiny.. haha..!
ReplyDeleteI do recall the buss stop now you mention it... and I had to laugh at the hedges being bigger.. I thought that as well ha!.. glad it was not just me then.. Another thing I remember from here was those very smelly 'pisstones' that were just down the road abit.. Hyde seemed to have a few of those dotted about.. I've have to do a post about the 'pisstones' of Hyde.. glad blogger dose not provide a scratch and sniff button.. ;o)
ReplyDelete"Pisstones" being the mens urinals, I gather? haha..
ReplyDeleteThe girls used to dare each other to run through them - many a man must have had the shock of their lives when 4 or more small girls ran through ... (Sorry mum ;oD)
I used to run like an asthmatic beanpole every morning from home to this bus stop to catch the 330 to Stockport. Used to work for North West Gas at Portwood. Sometimes, (Like never actually), I was on time and could afford the luxury of catching the bus from outside the Town Hall. Usually though, I had to run like a bastard to the end of Union Street. Sometimes I even had to chase the bus up Market Street, and hope like mad that the bus would stop outside Andersons Vets or even at the lights at the end of Dowson Road. You could hop on the bus in those days....the old Routemasters were the best!
ReplyDeleteAlso remember an old bloke who lived at the end of Amelia Street.....every morning he was outside his house and he wanted to talk to me, even though I was invariably late for my 330! Lovely bloke, hope he didnt think me too rude for running past him every morning with barely a word.
I was always late for work. Ivan, my boss, used to really give me a hard time over my punctuallity. How my heart would sink when I arrived outside Portwood gasworks and he was stood outside the workshop pointing at his watch. He used to love giving me grief over that.
Oh, and regarding the hedges Nancy, I vividly remember them from when I was taken for swimming lessons at the baths and they were HUGE. At least ten metres tall, like being in the jungle.
ReplyDeleteIs the PSA Hall so odly old fashioned? Can you imagine any institution writing on the side of the wall like that nowadays?
Simpler times then....
In the 1920's my Mum, was a little girl who had been adopted by a couple living on Church St, she used to attend dance classes with a group called "The Merry Sunbeams" in The PSA building on Thursday nights :-)
