Hyde Pays Tribute To The Mercian Regiment 08 November 2010

Heroes March Through Hyde
Hyde gave a fantastic welcome today to the soldiers of the The Mercian Regiment (Cheshire), as they marched through Hyde centre this morning to mark their return from a tour of Afghanistan. The troops gathered and prepared for the march past on Travis Street,  before parading at 10am. They were led by the Band Of The Prince Of Wales Division.  They started off marching along Union Street, Market Street and Manchester Road. Soldiers from the area were then invited into the town hall to meet Tameside mayor, Councillor  Jean Brazil who must have felt honoured to be in their company. The soldiers, all members of the 1st Battalion of The Mercian Regiment (Cheshire), commanded by Lt Col Andrew Hadfield did Hyde proud today. During their tour in Afghanistan the battalion, which recruits from the Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Merseyside areas - lost 12 soldiers including Corporal Harry Holmes..

  3. Warning - Grab a tissue for this post. I couldn't help but cry watching the video. Just so moving to see the wonderful folks of Hyde showing their support to our troops who sacrifice so much. How proud did our lads looks marching through the streets. Wish I could have been there in person to show my admiration. So very sad that so many have given their lives.

Sorry to hear you couldn't make it Tom, hope you feel better soon.

Eh makes you feel right proud reading a post like this:) Many thanks to Tom for putting this post together and to all who contributed with photos and video. Linda xx

  4. We had to go to t'doctors so only got a shot of the crowd waiting as we went down and then just caught the tail end of the parade as we came out. I'll be posting my pics on HDP on Thursday and will post a link to this post here and a couple of others on my Xtra blog.

Will post the links later when my posts are up.

I do not want to go into the why's and wherefores here... but I am a bit more sensitive to certain comments because of my past than most folks... 7. Excellent post Tom. It was really great to see the number of people who turned out, particularly in view of the weather. The ITV regional news did a nice report, but the one on the BBC seemed a little half-hearted. Perhaps if they march through Liverpool..........?
