One of our regular contributor John T as sent in some very interesting invoices fronm what I knew as Gerrards Garage.. John was lent these by Mark McKenzie of McKenzie Auto Repairs, so thanks to Mark as well.
John pointed out Invoice No.7577 dated November 1958 which made him laugh with the 1 Set of 'Taylor' Made Carpets, at £15-10s, which wasn't a cheep luxury but petrol at 4s 8.5d (approximately 23.5p per gallon or 5.17p per litre) definitely was!
Very interesting to see the prices of such things, especially as I was born in July 1958...
I've looked at these a few times now and marvelled at the prices...
ReplyDeleteAlthough decimalization came in 1971 when I was 13 years old, I still think in £.S.D. it's the same with metric... inches, feet and yards is what I still prefer..
There was something in the paper the other day, I don't remember the exact amount involved, but it was something like 7 shillings and sixpence, which was quoted as being 'about 37 and a half pence'. No it isn't! It's EXACTLY 37 and a half pence!
