In the early 1990s, the London based owners decided to close the Theatre Royal down in August 1993 as they considered it a liability. The theatre was full for the last few days of business, with people still offering support to Hyde's last local cinema. The final film to be shown was Walt Disney's classic, The jungle Book.

  1. I notice on the advert for the Royal Cinema: 'There is now a no smoking area', which must have been a big concession at the time instead of the universal 'smoke wherever you like' attitude. It reminds me of the way years ago that different countries tried to discourage smoking in certain environments:
In English 'Please refrain from smoking' - a polite request.
In French 'Defense de fumer', or 'Refrain from smoking' - not quite as polite.
In German 'Rauchen verboten!', or 'Smoking forbidden!' - a typical Germanic 'You will obey orders!'

  2. Great information.
I miss the old cinemas in Hyde.

  3. Seen loads of films at the Royals. Strange how with a population of Hyde and the resurgence of multiplex cinema, they still cannot make it viable. Perhaps if they showed Bollywood movies they might make ends meet.

  4. Graham... you could well be right there and it could be such a money spinner.
