Thought I'd start 2012 with a few of the pictures which were shown throughout last year... not all have been seen on the blog, but I think most have. Grant took these in the early 1990s, he contacted us and asked if they were suitable for use on here... I snapped his hand off... of course.. these are the kind of pictures we hope will turn up for us... and we are always grateful when they do. If you have any such pictures knocking about we love to see them and feature them here in 2012...  all the very best to you all we look forward to bringing you another years worth of memories.

  2. Hi Jean... I posted these picture of Grants... I don't know if he did live on Apethorn Lane or had a sister.. I do recall he lived near to Provident Mill at one time though... maybe Grant will look in and leave a comment.

  4. I'm fascinated by this wonderful set of photos. Is there a date with them? The black and white medium gives a sense of age but I don't think they're all that old. From the beginning I've picked out Nos 8 and 16 as not being able to identify the location, although No.8 could well be Park Road. Suggestions would be good!

  5. The pictures were taken in the early 1990s... you are correct about No.8 it is looking down Park Road. No.16 is another that is taken from the roof of the Town Hall using a telephoto lens which dose cause some confusion... the building to the left is in fact the Theatre Royal

  6. Yes, photo 8 is Park Road. Photo 16 looks to have been taken from the top of the Town Hall, the same viewpoint as photos 9, 10, 14, 17 and 18 - that's the top of the Theatre Royal on the left. The last photo also looks to have been taken from the top of the Town Hall, but from a different viewpoint. I love photo 17, the one of the clock tower.

  7. Some stunning photo's from Grant, especially like the Town Hall Clock tower. There seems to be something different and special in black and white photo's. I must start taking a few myself. Anyway a belated best wishes to everyone for Christmas and New Year.

  9. The photo with the carousel in is fantastic, any one remember the old fountain and seats set in stone around the market? i only just remembered that as i was looking at that photo!! Hyde.. what a fabulous old northern town!!!

  10. Thanks Dave and Tom. I like the last photo because it shows so clearly how Hyde is positioned in a hollow in the Pennine foothills. Someone once described it as an "S-bend with chip shops" - be that as it may, we're never far away from very beautiful countryside.

  12. I remember the Fountain very well... I recalled it being name the Wishing Well... all the heavy drinkers would sit there in the mornings, and in between day time closing hours 3-30-5-00 'Wishing' the pub was open..
Another memory I have of the fountain... and one I shouldn't perhaps own up to is the time me and Dave Edwards (Edder) filled it with detergent... the suds were blowing all over the square... the door way of the White Lion was a mass of suds.. and the traffic was altered until the fire brigade hosed the street down. The council did turn up to turn the fountain off but could not find the shut off valve for ages... The suds went right over to the town hall and covered cars... it was a very funny sight at the time... ha!

  13. I would have thought that the most difficult photo to pin-point would be the second one, but that's probably because it's a path that I've never walked along. That looks like the top of Rosemount Church on the left, and if that's so then that's Flowery Field Primary School to the left of the path, and the railway is behind the fence and trees on the right.

I hope the boys in blue haven't still got an open case file on the soapsuds incident at the fountain Tom!

  14. Correct about picture number two... the pathway is known as Bird Cage Walk.
As for the Fountain... we probably did the town centre a favour that day.... it was looking in need of a scrub down.

  17. Thanks for all of your very kind comments and thanks to Tom for using them.
They were taken in December 1991. I was lucky enough to get permission to go into the clocktower of the Town Hall and take photos, which was very exciting for me as I love that building. The reason for black and white was purely because I had bought all the equipment to develop and print black and white photos in my bedroom at the time. Sorry Jean, I'm not the Grant you know, I lived on Railway View opposite Provident Mill (till it was demolished in 1969 when I was 5) then lived on Rutland Street (Flowery Field) and ended up in Ashton. I do try and get my fix of Hyde as much as possible though.
