Adverts from another era

Further to the cast iron crane plaque shown on the blog the other day, here are two adverts for Adamsons, one showing the type of work they did.

The firm of Joseph Adamson was established in 1874 by Joseph Adamson in partnership with Harry Booth, who retired in 1887. Adamson's two sons were then taken into partnership in 1902. The business was carried on by the sons after Adamson's death in 1920 until 1925, when the partnership was dissolved leaving the eldest son, Daniel, as sole proprietor of the business, assisted by his two sons, G.H.Adamson and J.Adamson

    When I was a child living in Kensington Street, the family who lived in the big house through the gates at the bottom,which was called Gower Hey, were the Adamsons. George and Dorothy were the parents and there were 2 daughters and one son - Sally, Judy and John. Mrs Adamson was the daughter of Thomas Carter Beeley of Bowlacre and I'm sure Mr Adamson was connected to Joseph Adamson & Sons. Mrs Adamson was a magistrate and was chair of the bench at the commital hearing of Ian Brady and Myra Hindley. The Adamsons were always concerned for social welfare in Hyde, for which Mrs Adamson was awarded an MBE in the 50s.

    George Ryder Adamson married Dorothy Beeley at Hyde Chapel in 1924. He was the son of Daniel Adamson - Boiler Works Engineer Manager.George was born about 1898-1900, either in Denton or Newton. Can't find my notes at the moment.

    Thanks Jeffrey. George Adamson was born at Haughton Green in December 1898. He died in 1976 aged 77 years. I recall that he had only one arm and wonder if this was a war injury.
