Over to Beatrice...
"Hello,
My
GGGGrandmother Alice Tomlinson was the landlady of the Red Lion in 1881
on the census. The address was 52 Manchester Road which I know is the
Red Lion's address. She wasn't there in 1871 and she died 1883. Like
to know when she became the landlady if possible. One of her sons Ralph
Tomlinson went to the U.S.A. his relatives have a teacup or it may be a
mug with an inscription on which reads Mrs.Tomlinson, Red Lion, Hyde.
I wonder if anyone can tell me about this.
Kind regards,
Beatrice. "
I do hope someone can shed some light on this for her.
Many Thanks for sharing it with us, Beatrice ! :)
The Red Lion .
Hi Beatrice, I've found out the following for you:-
ReplyDeleteJames Tomlinson was the landlord of the Red Lion on Manchester rd from around 1857 to 1873, when presumably due to ill health or his actual death his wife Alice took over. She then ran the pub until her death in 1883. So between them they ran the Red Lion for around 25 years.
It was quite common in those days for personised pots and such like to be produced for landlords.
One of these jugs was on ebay this year and went for over £100... I've looked and looked but cannot find the picture which I saved... I think these water jugs are very collectable in their own rights, and not just in the area they were made for.
ReplyDeleteMy thanks to the Hyde Lad and Tom for their replies.I didn't realise that they were in the Red Lion all those years. The 1861 said they lived in Manchester Road, and they 1871 at Hyde Lane. How did you know they were for 25 uears did you look in the street directories?

Hi Beatrice, The information on landlords comes from many sources including street directories, licensing registers and other historical documents.
