The view of the tower in the distance is St Georges church and, I think, James
North's Mill...The black and white photo is of the ladder inside the tower of GX Mill known as a Jacobs Ladder.It led to the hatch that opened at the top of the tower. I climbed it a few times. There was a water tank up there if I remember and lot of pigeon muck ! What a view from the very top of the tower you could see for miles around!...."

ReplyDeleteBoth Mills were very similar though....
If you were looking from the roof of Gee X Mill towards St George's Church then the mill you'd see to the right of the church would be North's. Hyde Mill (or Senior Service) would have been to the left of St George's.
ReplyDeleteHard to believe people actually climbed vertically up that ladder with no handrails (one slip!) I think in this day and age the accident-claim companys would all be rushing to open an office at the bottom of it!

ReplyDeleteGreat pictures these - you'd have to have some bottle to climb that ladder and I doubt Elf and Safety would allow it today!
ReplyDeleteI may well be imagining this but I seem to remember that there was a time when the mill was used for the manufacture and/or dostribution of bleach which was called Mountainzone and that this name was painted on the tower. Does anyone else remember this?
What a breath-taking view from up there. I bed that ladder wouldn't get past Elf 'n Safety today though.
