Three Storey Building in Gee Cross

This building stands on the corner of Knott Lane and Stockport Road and was built circa 1770-1790 and was originally built for cotton processing.

It has also been amongst other things a Barbers shop and a Grocery shop owned by Alfred Woolley..
I'm happy to say it is still in use as a house !

Tom knew this as Johnny Grahams Barbers in the early 1960s while he attended Enfield Street School. He say Johnny was lovely chap who give you sweets if you kept still while he was working. Always the same hair cut.. shot back and sides.

On the Tithe map of  1836-51 the following details are shown about the building.
It was owned and occupied by Daniel Wood and was used as a homestead. It comprised of a house, outbuilding and garden.

  1. it's nice to see this building again. it's not changed much at all since i used to go in and wait for my younger brothers tom and john to have their hair cut at johny graham's barbers. this would be between 1958 - 1962 after coming out of enfield street school.
i also remember a little sweet shop close by that we used to rush into if we were lucky enough to have any pennies. i don't remember much about the shop but i remember the sweets. yummy!

  2. Was the sweet shop on the opposite side of the road in the block where Mr Lyne's grocers was and the chippy? Or was it the Gee Cross Dairy on the corner of Enfield Street and Stockport Road? Actually, back in the day it would never be a sweet shop or sweets - that would be posh - it would be a toffee shop!

  3. Before it was Graham's barbers (from the 1940s and on) it had been a grocer's shop owned by my great grandfather Alfred Woolley who was living there with his family in the 1881 census. (See a previous post). In the 1851 census it was the Beeston Castle with Joseph Booth a farmer of 35 acres employing 2 labourers living there with his family. I don't know where his land would be. The shop and the house next door (286 Stockport Rd, where I lived) had outside walls a foot thick. It had been divided up before my father Alf Ollerenshaw came to live there, in a very strange way, with one of our bedrooms on Knott Lane over Graham's part of the building. My family lived there from 1937 until the late nineties, over 60 years.

  4. Gillian, I think I remember you from Holy Trinity guides. I was Susan Ollerenshaw and we lived at 220 Stockport Road, the house next door to Mrs Orpet's haberdashery shop. I remember your dad working at Armitage's. Interestingly, when I was in Hyde a couple of months ago I had lunch with Margaret Hyde (as was) and she asked if I remembered you!

This was in the early to mid seventies I was wondering when the barber shop closed?

  7. This is for Werneth Low - Hi Susan I'd figured you must be Susan Ollerenshaw. Now I just have to work out how we might be related, however far back. I am working on my family tree and along the way have discovered I am distantly related to half the shopkeepers in Gee Cross back in my great grandparents generation and more recently including Bennisons and Lynes through my Dad. Yes I was in Holy Trinity Guides. I am still in touch with Margaret Hyde's sister Dorothy who I've know since we were about 6 yrs old. My Dad and her mother were at school together.
