I went with my mum, dad and brother in 1964. My dad and my brother and I loved it but my mum was terribly homesick so we came back after three years. What was really strange was that my mum's brother and sister also emigated at the sane time, so mum was obviously missing Hyde rather than her family.
Sadly mum and dad died last year but we often talked about our time in Australia often.
Grew up with Terry on Mansfield Road.He lived at 30, I lived at 40 and my forever friend CeeCee lived at 50. Missed Terry last time he was home{on my jollies}hope to meet up this time. Fond memories from Mansie the Astoria and the Town Hall.
Barry in Oz here, Bev Axon, was one of your uncles a Harbour Master in Melbourne, if so I knew him. Also, there used to be a Lass living in Newton in the 50s who had a prosthetic leg, her name was Beryl Axon, any relation ?
Hi Barry. I had two uncles in Australia but neither of them were called Axon. I don't know anyone called Beryl Axon either. We are quite a small family. My dad was Keith Axon and his sister was called Olwen. They lived in Newton all their lives

ReplyDeleteThere were a lot of £10 Poms from Hyde around the late 50s/early 60s. Colin Whittaker and his sister Joan from Allan Avenue were but two of them.
ReplyDeleteBarry in Oz. I migrated to Oz in 1969 as a 10 pound Pom. Been here now 43 years.
