Another pub looking like it's destined to close its doors for the last time.
Very sad if it happens as it used to be a very busy pub indeed.
A sad sign of the times .
Looking across towards the Werneth . Holy Trinity Church can be seen in the distance.
The building in the foreground was a business called Arch Joinery. There are now houses on this plot of land built by Roland Bardsley. It is called King Edward Court.

Looking down Treacle Brow.
Pictures taken by the late Alan Heelis
Wonderful memories of Treacle Brow - used to tipple over those bars every day on my way home from Holy Trinity School. Wonder if I could still do it!
ReplyDeleteI'll wait at the bottom and catch you....
ReplyDeleteI'm gutted about this one... my mind as been a whirl, faces from the past who have drunk there have been remembered this morning. So many are not gone... In fact Alan who took these pictures drank here, my uncle Jack Hawkins who taught metal work at Greenie drank here.... and so many more people I admired and got friendly with. At one time I got my wages paid in this pub... when the houses at the top of Grand Road were built I had to come here from my wages... I didn't need much dragging. I came out drunk every time and my wage packet was more than likely not even opened. I was the 'brew boy in the cabin.. most of the brick layers looked after me well.. some remained life long friends. Most I'm sad to say are now past.
New Years Eve was always fancy dress night... again some great memories are flooding back... I can see Tony Collins as a Viking, complete with plastic axe we went all over trying to find.
oh! dear I've even stood at the bar naked... but thats another store and poor Simon Boot the then landlord as still not got over the shock.
All in all it saddens me greatly to think this will be one more of our great pubs to fall by the wayside.

ReplyDeleteTom, you were such a wild child;) - sorry deleted first comment as spelling was rubbish!
ReplyDeleteTOM,TAKE IT ON!! IT'S YOURS FOR THE TAKING!!!!
ReplyDeleteLizzy.. I'm a wild child at heart... trouble is it's my heart that now stops me being wild...
ReplyDeleteRock Ape.. Again 20-25 years ago maybe... I'd not make those steps at the front now everyday... but saying that if I lived in a pub I'd not need to move far... ha!
My dad, Harold Ollerenshaw, drank there in the 50s and up to his death in 1962. In fact, most of the blokes who lived around our area of Stockport Road either drank there or The Buxton - or both, as my dad did. I never remember him going to the Queen Ad or Grapes. At the Werneth he used to organise the trips, but I'm blowed if I ever knew where they went to. I'm sorry about what's happening to these various watering holes - they evoke such wonderful memories.
ReplyDeleteI remember Tony dressed as a viking at one of the fancy dress parties in the Werneth, i went as a pirate and Tony kept hitting me with that plastic axe lol
ReplyDeleteGreat memories.
I recall talking with you about this when you called around Jon.. another time me and Tony went in drag... we both did a good impression of Cissie and Ada.. Roy Barraclough and Les Dawson's characters... some very good nights in the Werneth...
ReplyDeleteCan't believe The Werneth is closing. In the 1960's it was run by the parents of Cephas Howard who was a member of The Temperence Seven Band They were very well known.Ann Bacon(Stafford)
ReplyDeleteYesterday, while I was at work, my sister stole my apple ipad and
ReplyDeletetested to see if it can survive a 40 foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation.
My iPad is now broken and she has 83 views. I know this is totally off topic but I had to share it with someone!
