  1. Mr Merrick's shop was a bread shop second along from corner of Joel Lane. Corner shop was Lyne's Grocers, then Merrick's bread shop, then Jolly & Hollingworth's Plumbers, next was Moore's Sweets & tobacconist, then Haigh's Chippie. At the Rock Street corner much later was Saxton's Sweetie Corner.

  3. @ Downsie - I just go off the information supplied with the photos.
Was there a bike shop in Gee Cross ? If so, who owned it and where was it ?
I learn things every day on here :)

  4. I certainly remember the bakers & confectioners shop next to Lynes, from the sixties anyway, as I went in there many times, in fact all of the local shops in Gee Cross around the fifties & sixties were very good,3 bakers shops, butchers shops, plumbers,(this guy had all sorts) clothes shop near the Methodist church, close to Harwoods Bakers, (loved their honey buns) Yes, Gee Cross was a lovely village back then, saved having to go down Hyde! Can't remember a bike shop though, must have been earlier maybe!

  5. I don't remember a bike shop in GX either! Trish is quite right when she says that everything you needed was available in the village shops. It even had its own chemist - Harold Beaumont had a lovely shop just about where The Stables is now. I recall another chippie which was down the hill between Knott Lane and Enfield Street near where the wine shop is, but it wasn't as good as the one facing the chapel. Actually, if you count Jackson's at the corner of King Edward Road, GX had 3 chippies! Good times.
