Gee Cross Post Office

This would have been the hub of the village at one time. It disappeared a few years ago when cuts were made in the Postal Service. Sadly missed.

Not a lot has changed except the removal of the small wall at the front and the addition of the postbox.

The 4 views above have been taken for us by Dave Williams today after reading the post... he as very kindly cropped them to be a close a copy of the older ones and I think he has done a sterling job for us.

The shop next door to The Post Office brought back memories, it was Jack Wright's newsagents. I used to have an evening paper round with him in the late 50s. I got the posh end of Gee Cross, Bowlacre and West Park, and then delivered down Stockport Road, Apethorn Lane and then onto the Vessey estate. I was paid 7/6d (37.5p) a week, the rest of them only got 5/- (25p). Got good tips at Christmas as well.
Just for the record The Cheshire Cheese had The Manchester Evening News and Harry Harrop at The Lamb Inn had The Manchester Evening Chronical!
I was a Boy Scout at the time (scout troop photo to follow)and for a 'Bob-a-Job' I had to clean Jack Wright's daughter Valerie's bike, what a mess it was, it took me what seemed ages!

Great story John , thanks for sharing. I used to do my paper round from Wilds 'papershop which was near the Crown pub. I did the Edna Street area and made a fortune from Christmas tips.....
Yes, both buildings are still there, Linda. The Post Office is no more ,unfortunately.. It's been turned into a house now - I'll try to get a recent shot for you and post it. The shop is still a papershop.

Another great posting Nancy... One of the teachers from Greenfield Street school lived in the post office.. I think his wife was the Post Mistress.

Thank you to Dave for taking the trouble to go out and get the four pictures that have been added to the post.. I could not remember if the post office was still being used as a shop or not.. so to see these have answered that for me. I see the post box as been moved to School Lane. Another thing that I always check are the chimney stacks.. how much better the buildings look with them...
Thanks again Dave ;0)

I've just noticed it says 'The Gift Shop' over the window in the second picture... I'm sure I remember that now... anyone know how long that sign was there?

Hi Susan
Your Grandfather must have been a very busy man, the post offices would have been very much a big part of the community and Postmasters would have been held in high esteem I'm sure.
If you have a picture of him and some more information I will do a post about on the blog if you'd like. just email me on hydonian@gmail.com
