Below are a few mixed photos of Enfield Street School before it became Laurel Bank Residential Care Home circa 1990..


 

 The previous two photos show the School  looking up from Knott Lane.
I love the fact that it is literally a lane ie no proper road laid yet ! It looks so rural !

Family Pictures

We had a nice email the other day from Joyce Jones, who told us how much she enjoys our site, especially the photos. Joyce’s brother Neil Howarth has donated photo's and memories in the past,  so Joyce has kindly followed suit and sent in the two pictures below.

Whit-Sunday gathering for Hyde Chapel, meeting outside Enfield  Street Infant school. Joyce thinks the year is circa 1962, going by the car and the colour of the bus stop I think Dave stands a good chance of coming a bit nearer to the date... I'm for later on this one. 

Thank you Joyce for sending these in... it's a pleasure seeing such pictures being sent in... I've always liked looking at 'family pictures' and the one where you are all on The Low is such a nice picture, and I'm sure I remember that bench or one's like it.

Update

Joyce as been back in touch and as amended the date of the bottom picture to 1970, the 1960 date was a mistake.... the young lad under the flowers who is holding the banner is Philip, Joyce' youngest brother.. he was born in 1962 and was eight when this picture was taken... thank you for the update Joyce. 
Philip thinks it's 1974....
I'm not getting involved lol

Thank you David for sending this in... I would most likely have been at Enfield Street myself at this time... I know I walked to school at times with Elaine Newton, and Gail Clough.. I certainly recall Anne Billinge... I was in school with her younger brother.. also a David. Kenny Rogers I know very well... and another one I recall is Maurice Pepper.. I was around at his house many a time calling for his younger brother Duncan... I remember how sad I was when they moved to Australia.. Maurice contacted me a few mouths after coming across the site. The other lad I know there is Gordon Smith... again him and his younger brother Ronny were good friends back then.. Nice seeing their names popping up...

Enfield Street School Around 1924/25

On the top row is Leonard Saxton and on the front row is Alice Booth who was born 1914

A fantastic collection of early school photographs from what started as Gee Cross Council School and finished it's school days as Enfield Street School.  All these pictures have been donated by Fred Booth. Fred has donated many great pictures and these will be shown over the following weeks. I sure some of these family are still in the area of Gee Cross... I see a few who remind me of Gee Cross folk. both from my school days and even one or two now who resemble people I know.
