Shanes Field aka Buttercup Meadow

Below is a photo of Shanes Field aka Buttercup Meadow or the field above Gower Hey Wood. It was taken in the late 1970's and you can just see the spire of Hyde Chapel on the horizon. The row of houses to the left are on Oxford Road.


  The day looked absolutely Beautiful, the flowers in the meadow stunning. I hope that with Gower Hey Conservation Groups excellent work and with the field now no longer being mowed, the field will eventually return to the beautiful wild flower meadow it used to be. Signs are good that this will happen.

Gower Hey Wood.

 Here are a few recent photographs of Gower Hey Woods showing the ongoing work that is being done by the Gower Hey Conservation Group. They are doing a great job with the new pond and the woods look so much cleaner and nicer.


Any idea what species of tree this is? The bark is quite distinctive .


The new pond is looking good. Such an improvement on the dank, dark wetland that stood there before the pond was made.



The entrance to the woods via the Trans Pennine trail between Stockport Road and Apethorn Lane..

Last year , after visiting the woods to see the important work done by the Conservation Group, MP Jonathan Reynolds said  

"Members of the Gower Hey Wood Conservation Group have worked hard to ensure the local community can fully appreciate the natural and industrial heritage of the Gower Hey Wood area. And their commitment and effort should be congratulated."

...and so say all of us !

Gower Hey Woods

I notice  that they have started to build a pond in Gower Hey Woods. This area has been a dark ,unwelcoming part of the woods for many years. It's a great improvement and sterling work by Gower Hey Conservation Group.

I'm looking forward to seeing all the wildlife it attracts !

 Gower Hey Wood Conservation Group

The group are a voluntary organisation whose aims include maintaining and improving the general environment, enhancing wildlife habitats, and providing a place of enjoyment for local people and visitors.

Working in partnership with the Council and its Countryside Ranger Service, the group meets several times a year to plan activities and share information.

Not the first time a pond/lake as been in the woods.. and by the sound of the description above from the book A History Of Hyde it was once a very nice sight indeed... I'm sure it can be and will be again if this group have anything to do with it.
