Built in 1822 /  rebuilt in 1843

Main church building demolished circa 1970 ?

 

The Church is still thriving as the United Church, on Union Street in Hyde.

It can be seen centre of the photo, with the library to the left.

 The following was sent to us by Alan Bell in regards to our appeal for Union Street Church's exhibition.

"I read with interest about Union St. church celebrating its 200th year. You asked for any information or photographs about the football club there. The attachment is a picture of the 1960-61 football team after we had won the cup in the picture. The final was played on Hyde United's ground and Union St. won 3-2. My name is Alan Bell and I am 3rd from left on the back row.Can anybody help me by filling in the rest of the names all I can remember is John Holt on the back row and I think it is Arthur Chesworth Holding the cup.

UNION STREET - AN APPEAL FOR INFORMATION.

Next year Union Street Congregation Church (now the United Church) will be celebrating its 200th anniversary following its founding in 1814.

The Church is planning to celebrate this important event and would be grateful to know if any of the readers of the Hydoneon Blogspot have any memories, information, photographs, documents, memorabilia etc relating to the history of the Church.

Old family albums may contain photographs of weddings that took place at the Church.  There may be old pictures of Whit Walks in years gone by.  Some readers may have old pantomime programmes or details about social and religious activities.  Or they may just have memories and anecdotes about past events that took place at the Church.

If anyone has pictures and records of the Union Street Football Club, founded by the Church's youth club in 1956 and which went on to become one of Hyde's most successful amateur clubs during the sixties and seventies, those too would be most valuable.

Although there are a few postings about the Church on the site, any additional help, information or artifacts would be gratefully accepted.

If you contact the site, we will ensure that all relevant offers of help and information are passed on to the organisers.

Union Street Congregational Church Foundation Stones

Nancy recently did a post on Union St Congregational Church which showed the laying of the foundation stones, Dave very kindly went out and took the pictures below to show how they look now. 

Whilst doing this post I had a thought about these foundation stones and realised there must be many knocking about in Hyde. I thought it would be a good idea to collect pictures of any that are out there. I
f you know of any or have pictures of them , please let us know.

Union Street Congregational Sunday School

Laying of the foundation stones of the Sunday school on 4th July 1914..









There were three foundation stones laid, but you can only see two of them clearly in these pictures. You can just see part of the third one (or first one to be exact, reading from left to right) in the last picture. You can just see the 'E' of Elijah Roebuck, JP, the other two being laid by A Milne Fletcher, JP and Thomas Brownson, BA. The Union Street Congregational Church has now been demolished, but the Sunday school survives in the form of The United Church adjacent to the library on Union Street.

Union St Congregational Whit walk.

Here is a delightful photograph that was given to my Mum by a Mrs D Burdekin who lived on Norfolk Street.
It shows Zion Congregational Church walking up Market Street  in the Whit Walks. I believe Mrs Burdekin is the lady looking after the children.



It took a lot more than a spot of rain to spoil the walks. as you can see by the huge turnout!
I have no date for this photo yet so if anyone out there can help , please leave a comment below.

We were contacted by Gordon Burdekin who tells us that he believes the photo was taken in 1960 and it was Zion Congregational not Union Street Congregational, which I have amended. His Mother is holding the hand of his sister Pamela who is aged about 3.

Whit Walks 2 (Hyde Baptist)

 A North Cheshire Herald photo of the Hyde Baptist and Union Street Congregational Church walking with their banner past the old Post Office building on Corporation Street. Dated 1969.

The Whit walks were always a big affair. It's such a shame that they aren't held in such a grand manner anymore.

Union Street Congregational Church became the United Church in 1973. Two Churches joined together because the original buildings were pulled down - United Reform Church & Hyde Baptist Church.
