The Rising Sun, The Horseshoe, or The Manor House

UPDATE
INFORMATION AS NOW COME TO LIGHT THAT THIS BUILDING WAS ONCE KNOWN AS THE 'RISING SUN' AND NOT AS THE HORSE SHOE AS THE POST STARTED OFF AS. WE WILL DO ANOTHER POSTING SOON WITH A BIT MORE INFORMATION.
THANK YOU ALL WHO HELPED TO SOLVE THIS MYSTERY, NONE MORE SO THAN GILL, THE PRESENT OWNER OF THE HOUSE, AND PAUL TAYLOR AUTHOR OF 'A HISTORY OF THE PUBS OF HYDE AND DISTRICT'

This rather splendid photo is of the Horseshoe pub on Chainbar Lane in Hattersley.
Sadly now defunct.
Gives you a feel of how Hattersley used to be before the mass building of the estate in the 1960's.

Thanks to Jack and Doreen Morris for sharing this photo.

Dave went out looking today to see if he could spot where the Horses Shoe might have been... and was more than pleased to see it is still standing and put to good use. The owner pulled up while Dave was there and confirmed it had been the Horse Shoe at one time... I think this is another great post from Nancy, and again Dave and his detective work and camera as come in very handy...    Tom

I'd never heard of this before Nancy... I'd love to see more photo's of this area before the housing was built there...

Was it on Chainbar Lane? Paul Taylor in 'A History of the Pubs of Hyde and District' says: 'The exact location is not known, but was probably on the old Pudding Lane, which used to be the main route from Mottram to Hyde before Mottram New Road was built.'

Well,Dave the photo above ,which was sent to my Mum ,had the information on the back so I'm just going off that! I'll see what I can find...

That's the Old Manor House!

Hi Gerald... On the back of the photo what Nancy posted it states it is the Horse Shoe Public House, and today when Dave was taking picture the owner confirmed it had indeed been a pub... now you are saying it is a Manor House... ha! lets hope we can get this right.... between us all.

"The Old Manor House" is what it says on the side of the house. The fact that it was a former public house rather than a real manor house probably is the reason why efforts to find out its history drew a blank.

Cheers for the up-date Gerald,
Every little helps to put these 'jigsaws' together... I live on a Manor Road.... but there is certainly no sign of one... ha! saying that I would make a perfect Lord of the Manor... ;0)

Another quote from Paul Taylor's book: 'The landlord back in 1781 was John Turner and the inn was then known as the Blacksmiths Arms. Both names imply that the house was connected with a smithy, and the landlord perhaps ran both businesses. The inn became the Horseshoe around 1850 and the inn was closed down in 1880.'

Gerald (SK14) said...

"the inn was closed down in 1880" - is that a typo for 1980?

Tom said...

Gerald: 1880 is what is stated in Paul's excellent book... I'm sure this post will have another turn or two about it yet..
Dave: I do hope the owner reads this.... he will be well pleased with all the interest. We have a book winging it's way from over the seas that might be of help to this post... It as kindly been donated to the blog for future reference and is about this area of Hyde

Hi, I have been looking into this blog about the Old Manor House on Chain Bar Lane. After contacting the owner and my own information, the conclusion is that the house used to be a PH called the Rising Sun and not the Horseshoe. This I think stood further up on the RHS, now demolished. ( CCC Tithe mapsplot 139 & 165). As far as the name The Old Manor House is concerned we think that this is just wishful thinking on the previous owners opinion. The name Chain Bar Lane originates from the fact that there used to be a Toll Bar at the top of the lane. Another interesting story regarding the house is that it is supposed to be haunted by a Victorian Lady dressed in grey.

Regards Paul Taylor
