Excellent post Nancy..
In the late 1970s, I was working and living in the Albion pub.. Harry would call in now and then for a drink... if he had the choice he would sit near to the front window... If my mind serves me right he drank bottle Guinness.. Once he was sat down out would come a small pad and he would sketch away... some of the drawings would be left on the table tucked under the ash-tray or given to us at the bar on his way out. The picture above 'Two Gentlemen In Conversation is very similar to the sort of drawing he would do. He drew me behind the bar a few times ... we would pin them up behind the bar and there must have been quite a few of them there. I don't know what became of them and often wished I had kept some. My memory of the man himself was of a nice old gentleman, he was polite and seemed happy with his own company.... I can't recall him in conversation with others. I know he used to call in the White Lion and sketch in there also.. they to had a good collection pinned up behind the bar.

Talking of local artists, I have two beautiful watercolour paintings by Charles Smith, who I think lived at Denton. One of them is of Werneth Low, which I bought at an artshop in Reynold Street, Hyde, and the other of Holy Trinity Church. Which I bought from Dave Cannon at the visitor centre. Does anyone know anything about this artist?

I have a friend who is a local artist Jack Cheetham.. he calls round most weeks for a chat so I will ask Jack if he knows Charles Smith. Hyde lost a very good artist a few years back... another friend of mine called Trevor Grimshaw. I must sort out a posting about him and his work.

We've got a few of Charles Smith's paintings, and on the back of one of them there's a paper with some details about him. I'll scan it and send it to you Tom.

I too am a proud owner of a watercolur by "Charles C. Smith Landscape Artist Watercolours & Oils". It is signed "C C Smith" and the address is given as Denton, Manchester.
It is entitled "Dusk, Hillside Farm. It had a label on the back with the exact location of Hillside Farm however I am currently unable to locate it.

Hi there, my mother in law has recently passed away and while sorting through her belongings we came across a watercolour by Charles C Smith entitled " Borrowdale". Does anyone know anything about this artist or if the position has any value? Thanks. Phill
