Spring Gardens

Spring Gardens stands at the bottom of Old Road . It used to lined with old cottages which I believe belonged to Ashton Brothers. Sadly the cottages have been demolished now.

It looked so much nicer with the cottages and without the collection of Wheelie Bins !

The opposite end which, as Dave says in the comments ,the only remaining buildings are The Flowery Field Pub, a house and a shop.

It certainly did... I can't see why the cottages had to come.... nothing much as been gained by there removal.
As for the bins... I detest them... I've had many a photograph spoilt by them.

The only bit of Spring Gardens which remains is at the other end where the Flowery Field pub is. Just the pub, one house and a corner shop, although the shop doesn't seem to be still trading.

I must get a photo of the other end and add it to the post ! Thanks Dave :)

How many houses and buildings have been ceremoniously demolished only to be replaced by blocks of red brick monstrosities and car parks. Since Tameside Council took over from the old Hyde Borough Council we have seen not only our market go down the drain, but also much of our heritage that was left to us by Hydonians of the past. The old Police Station on Beeley Street (Hyde Lads Club) should certainly have been preservation order placed on it.

And the Municipal Building to make an Asda. It had a wonderful staircase and a large fantastic stained glass window as well as the columns outside.

The corner shop used to be Flowery Field sub post office. The sub-postmaster's daughter worked in the office at Throstle Bank Mill.

I lived on Northrop Street until 1973 and remember Spring Gardens well. My dad used to park his wagon behind the pub and the post office.

Does anyone know the exact location of the Co-op on Furnace Street. Also I am looking for Astley Street which had five cottages belonging to the Co-op next door to the shop. I can't find it on any maps.

Hello,

I used to live on Northrop street, moved to Newton in '73. None of the photos survived. If anyone has any pics I would be very grateful.

Simon.
