Jacqueline and Colin Ridgway.

We were quite surprised that an exhibition of Harry Rutherford’s paintings was held in Ashton. The majority of his paintings were of Hyde district,it seems that since Tameside was formed Ashton has become “TOP DOG” why has this happened? Hyde has more in common with Stalybridge both being in Cheshire, whilst Ashton was a Lancashire town. In Hyde Town Hall was a Mayor’s Parlour where all the photo-framed pictures of previous Mayors were on display, where have all these gone? In my brother John’s house there is a large reproduction of Rutherford’s famous picture of Hyde Market. What is in Hyde Town Hall now? Seems everything has gone to Ashton, maybe some of the Hyde Counsellors and MP’s can answer that! Thank you for your good wishes for Easter and we wish you a very Happy Easter.

Don't forget that Hyde still has Rutherford's magnificent mural, which he painted in 1951 to commemorate the Festival of Britain. It can be found at the top of the main staircase of the town hall and is well worth looking at - can you pick out the local scenes depicted there? If TMBC wanted to remove this fine piece to Ashton, it would have to also remove the wall that it's painted on. As I'm no longer living locally, I would urge those who are to keep an eye on things there!!
