Meadow Street 1933

The following picture shows Meadow Street in 1933 before the Redfern's Rubber Works extension was built .

According to old maps, Meadow street used to run parallel to Stockport Road so I am assuming the houses shown ( now demolished ) were also a part of Meadow Street.
Stockport Road runs from bottom left of the picture and the Clarkes Arms pub can be seen bottom right.

I just love how the houses hung their washing out to dry on the railway embankment.
They must have got rather sooty sometimes though.

I love these aerial photos.

The washing on the embankment is a nice sight, they must have had the train timetable next to the wash tub so they knew when it was safe (!)

Also, I noticed that almost everybody in the photo is looking up at the plane which must have been a great rarity in those days.

Most noticeable onlookers are the men standing outside the Clarke's Arms, and the woman directly opposite Meadow St, standing right in the middle of the road, with her hands on her hips. :)

Was the advertising hoarding on the gable end for the furniture shop in Hyde? I wonder if the owner / landlord of the end terrace received a payment for using the gable end as they do now?

@ John T ... the advertising was for a Painter and decorators, I think, called Shaw !
