Hyde Mystery Photograph

Another mystery photograph for which I am seeking information. I am fairly sure the photo was taken somewhere in Hyde. There is an advert for the Scala picture house, and for pet supplies. The large building wall to the left is a bit baffling. Just who are the men in the picture, where are they and what are they doing. It's over to you.

Been looking at the picture can't place it.. I've tried to think where the tram tracks could have been and the stone work buildings... if you look at that wall in the background with the man walking by it gives some idea of the height of the building... interesting that no windows are there... I'd say that was a gable end..
I wonder if the trade directories can be a help.. the two signs on the wall to the right are for Spratts pet supplies. Maybe the building was a pet store... I know my granddad and dad bought pigeon corn, rabbit and chicken pellets from somewhere in Hyde. I have found copies of the signs which I will add to the post.
As for your book Paul.. I've Checked mine and I've not got a copy so put one aside for me please.

Could the building to the left be a retaining wall?
I recall that there was a pet food supplier on Clarendon Street with big doors and signs like those in the picture.

Ian you might well be right... will check your folder out... funny thing is I dragged your folder off a disk on Saturday and it's on my desktop... I wonder if the men are the same.. or at least some of them...

Ian
I checked the pictures against each other and I think this shot is earlier than the 'Untouchables' from your your pictures.. well worth a look.. I then checked any Charabanc outings on Tameside's Achives but nowt turned up there as well..

What an interesting picture. These guys certainly look like they're out to enjoy themselves. Two things strike me - the single tram/train track and the well-dressed children. I too thought of a day trip but wonder also if it is something to do with the Whit Walks. Don't recognise the buildings.

Tom, they may be rival gangs! ;>D

(Sorry to pester, but can you remind me what that old mapping website was again? Was going to follow the tram tracks but can't find it)

Shot in the dark this! Is it Smithy Lane?

Could it be the side wall of the Astoria/Scala picture house? Recently the plaster all fell off and the brickwork is very rough underneath similar to the photo. The advert on the pic is for the Scala too!
