Excellent Nancy... I have been tempted to get on of those jugs... and the plate. I would think the rarest is the Barlova Tin.. I'll keep my eye open for one of these.. great post Nancy..

There's a description of the ox roasting of 17 June 1931 on page 185 of 'The History of Hyde' which includes the following: 'Two thousand special commemoration plates were made by Messrs. Wedgwoods, the celebrated potters, some in sepia, and some in blue, the design being the work of Mr. Potts, headmaster of the Hyde School of Art.' There's also a photograph on the next page of the Mayor, Thomas Middleton, cutting the first slice.

I've read that Dave, but not picked up on some being in Sepia, or that 2000 were made.. must keep my eyes peeled for a sepia one coming up on Ebay... ha!

My commemoration plate is black or very dark grey. It belonged to my grandparents and has been passed down. I have it hanging on the wall of my sitting room.

I am so glad you left this comment... I got one of the OX Roast plates a while back... and have wondered about the colour of the transfer, as mine seems to sound like yours. I also bought one of the Barlova Tins.. my Mrs ...Jane thinks I'm mad. ;0)

Would you believe it? I threw a Barlova tin away last summer. It had been my mother's button tin and then I inherited it. It was definitely past its best. I would have given it to you Tom.
