Hi there, our names are Trevor Kay and Dave Oates we and others are celebrating what will be fifty years this year since we were lucky enough to win the British national junior team championship at cycle speedway in September of 1964 at Raynes park in Surrey Is it possible to have brief mention of this on the Thameside blog It all started out as just a bit of fun but in the enclosed brief history it will tell the story better

The piece of land you are on about-High Ground, was formerly known as the Brick yard.
Those were the days! Amateur sportsmen really were amateurs, not like today, and no health and safety worries, either. Well done, lads, and what a lovely, enthusiastic post!
There were two great cycle tracks I remember, one on the coal pitt hills on lower Bennett Street, and one just off the canal tow path near to Apethorn Lane.
When I was a kid playing up on the 'Brickyard' in the early '70's. I remember a circular track being there, I used to ride around it on my bike.
I don't know if it was associated with the High Bank Tigers, but it was a distinctive track, purposefully made.
It wasn't far from The Talbot pub on Hoviley.
Nice post dealing with old Hydonians when Hyde was still Hyde and everyone knew each other.

The last two aerial photos were added after my previous post, and Yes, there it is, just as I remember it.
All that area was known as the Brickyard, St.Paul Primary School played their school matches on the pitch that was a little higher up than the track. Beyond that stood a large pond full of frogs and newts. The Bailey family lived near the mill which you got to throgh a massive open gate between a row of terraced houses.
talking of cycle speedway i seem to remember a cycle speedway track being built in the1970's alongside the longdendale sports centre in mottram in longdendale along with a bmx cyclecross track. the last time i was in the area they were still there but very overgrown.does anybody know if they are still in use or anything about the usage of these facilities in the past. i only ask as these were built right behind my parents house at the time and i would like to know more.ps you can see them on google maps along side the football pitches. yours cliff
