Hyde United FC

Whilst Tom's unable to put any posts on the blog I've found a couple of items which may interest some people and the first is some photographs which were passed to me by Keith Oldham and which he says were taken by Bob Murray at a Hyde United v Fleetwood game at Easter 1969.
Jeff Fry (11) congratulates Kenny Hewitt (8) who scores Hyde's 1st goal
Ray Perry (1st left) rushes in to challenge Fleetwood keeper Cooper
Ian Blyth (4th from left) scoring Hyde's 4th goal

The first match that I saw at Ewen Fields was on New Year's Day in the late 1950s, 1958 I think. Hyde beat Northwich Victoria 6-0 or 6-1, but I don't suppose there's many people around now who would remember that game.

Union Street Church Football Team.

The following was sent to us by Alan Bell in regards to our appeal for Union Street Church's exhibition.

Over to Alan....

"I read with interest about Union St. church celebrating its 200th year. You asked for any information or photographs about the football club there. The attachment is a picture of the 1960-61 football team after we had won the cup in the picture. The final was played on Hyde United's ground and Union St. won 3-2. My name is Alan Bell and I am 3rd from left on the back row.Can anybody help me by filling in the rest of the names all I can remember is John Holt on the back row and I think it is Arthur Chesworth Holding the cup.
Yours Alan Bell."

The Battle of the Bridge by Bill Lancashire

Here is a poem that was recently sent to us by Bill Lancashire.
He also included this message....

"A few weeks ago a friend of mind challenged me to write a poem about Hyde United, so considering the triumphant season we have just enjoyed it may be an appropriate opportunity to post it. It's been written with a strong nod and a wink to James Leigh and if you you feature it I hope that the readers can spot my cryptic allusions to the ten pubs mentioned in the poem...."

Hyde FC revisited.

A postcard showing the Hyde FC team of the season 1913/14.

Hydefc1913-14

Hyde FC were formed in 1885 the club changed its name to Hyde United in 1919, before reverting to Hyde FC in June 2010.

*Historian Tom Middleton has said the club began at Walker Fold on the old Hyde Rugby Club field but the North Cheshire Herald refers to a ground off Mottram Road. Hyde F.C. later moved to Townend Street but moved to Ewen Fields in 1906 after merging with Hyde St George's who played in the Lancashire Combination league. The club folded in 1917 during WW1 on the grounds of what was termed war reaction. When the conflict ended, demands were made to resurrect the club. Although the "new" club was called Hyde United (to avoid incurring the old club's debts), it was effectively Hyde FC under a new name and included many of the former players.

Billy Porter - Hyde United FC

PhotobucketBelow is a newspaper cutting that shows William (Billy) Porter who played for Hyde United FC.

Billy was an English Fullback who was born in Fleetwood in July 1905. He played for Windsor Villa, Fleetwood Town, Oldham Athletic, Manchester United and Hyde United, with a few guest appearances for various teams during the Second World War. Records show that he played 274 games for Oldham Athletic...65 for Manchester United and also appeared in 121 war-time matches for Reds... Unfortunately I don't have any record of his Hyde United career. He was transferred from Manchester United to Hyde United in September 1944.
Billy was instrumental in supporting and developing Johnny Carey (Manchester United), who presented Billy with his first Irish Cap.

Billy worked at Metro Vicks during war. This was a British heavy electrical engineering company of the early-to-mid 20th century formerly known as British Westinghouse.

Sadly, Billy died on the 28th April 1946 in Ashton-Under-Lyne. Bert Whalley, Manchester United Footballer and later Coach of the Busby Babes who perished in the Munich Disaster, was with him when he collapsed & died . He was only 40 years of age.
He was player/manager at Hyde United at the time of his death.

He won the Lancashire Combination Cup with Fleetwood in 1925/6 &

Won the 2nd Division title with Manchester United.
He took Hyde to Cheshire County Cup final.

The above picture shows a game between Droylsden FC and Hyde United which ended 1-1. Billy is shown on the left.

Many thanks to Nick Clarke for this cutting and "Mr Mujac" for the information.
Much appreciated.
