Barlova was once made and packaged in Hyde, their factory was situated on Cheapside ...... The above 'Blue Label Blend' 8oz tin would have set you back 1'10 (1 Shilling and 10 Pence) less than 10p now.
It was a powered drink, " A Blend Of Malt, Milk & Egg. Chocolate Flavour. What I liked on the tin was this: Made & Packed In Gt. Britain By Barlova Limited, Hyde, Cheshire, " The Dairy County ".
I can find very little information about this company from it's time in Hyde... 'Barlova' as a trademark now belongs to a company from Canada called Bedessee Imports Ltd. The Barlova trademark is filed in the 'Staple Foods Products, and Light Beverage Products categories. Their food products are Barley Flour, Barley Malt Flour, Rice Flour, Tapioca Products,Corn Flour, Wheat Flour, and Instant Coffee and Cocoa.
I have now spoke to two people that recall drinking this... and both enjoyed it.. and considered it a night-time treat. One recalled another of there drinks being a dark malt drink that was favoured by her dad.. If you know anyone who recalls this company and their products let us know please.
UPDATE
Barlova Items Belonging To Neil Oldham
Interesting Label About The War
These are in fantastic condition.
Over to Sharon Oldham, Neil's wife:
Thought I'd just share these with you that came into my husbands possession several weeks ago, he originally had four but gave one to his father, Though Barlova factory in Cheapside Hyde is well documented above, it only has pictures of the Blue powder tins and not these tablets below. Hope this may be of interest to some.

There's a jingle from 1962 by Barry Gray, Barlova (Malted Milk Drink) it can be downloaded from Amazon which is worth listening to for a giggle

Ian... I look forward to seeing this book..... you know the kettle will be on mate.. ;0)
Tom, my Mum worked at Barlova! Her friend has told me to give her a call - she's got a lot of information on Barlova so hopefully both of us can add to this post!
Good news all round then Nancy.. nice to know the 'names' still going and selling similar products... what a shame it had to leave Hyde though..
I remember drinking Barlova after returning from the air raid shelter under Stretford Library - this would between c.1940 - 1943. It became unavailable. Was far too young to ask why - b.1938!
Thank you 'Anon' for your memory of this drink... was it nice by the way? ;o)
The signature tune to a 1962 advert for Barlova has been immortalised in this compilation album:
'Stand By For Adverts' - a compilation of Barry Gray's advertising jingles. (Trunk Records, 2011)
It included backing vocals by The Mike Sammes Singers. Link: Stand By For Adverts page. Alternatively, you can download the Barlova theme separately from Amazon.co.uk.
Wow, thanks for that Mancunian !
I lived near to the Barlova factory in the 1940,s early 50,s .I remember that you could get Barlova Tablets too, they were tasty and us kids loved them. Also I think it was on the same site as Creese,s Brewery.
I REMEMBER AS A LITTLE BOY IN JAMAICA
I WAS MAYBE 9 OR 10 YEARS OLD AND MY MOTHER USED TO PURCHASE THIS TIN OF BARLOVA EVERY WEEK AT THE GROCERY.
I WISH IT WAS STILL AROUND. I AM NOW IN MY SIXTIES AND WOULD DO ANYTHING TO HAVE A DRINK OF BARLOVA ON A NIGHTLY BASIS.
SYDNEY (IN TORNTO, CDA)
Yes It was the old Creese brewery site, which I used to walk past on my way to HGS in the 1960s. My mother worked in the offices at one point. Don't suppose anyone has a photo? Being a brewery historian.
Iremember when in infants school just before the war noticing our teacher, Miss Johnson, used to have a tin of Barlova on her desk, no doubt to make a drink at break time.
Was born on Cheapside 1942. lived there until I was 12. My sister worked at Barlova which was only 4 doors away. besides the powder they also made tablets which you could suck on or crush to make a drink. Also mice and lots of big rats thrived on the stored raw ingredients. We never ran short of Barlova it was a great product.
One of these tins would be a great addition to Tamesides museums collection...Not sure if they have anything from the Barlova factory....
