The name "HYDE" is derived from the hide, a measure of land for taxation purposes, taken to be that area of land necessary to support a peasant family. In later times it was taken to be equivalent to 120 acres .
I am lucky to have here with me now a copy of James Leigh's book... Gleams Of Sunshine.. His poetry is a must for any Hydonian. There is a wealth of local history within its pages and it shows that over 100 years ago Hydonians felt the need to make a note of their past. Nancy and myself are trying to do something similar here, maybe not as poetic as James Leigh, but we have the advantage of his work and the books by Thomas Middleton.... namely 'The Annals Of Hyde', and of course the many photographs taken in the last centry. If we can just build up a simple collection of pictures and memories that can be seen and enjoyed by others then I think I speak for both Nancy and myself when I say it is our pleasure to spend the time it takes doings so... Enjoy :O)
If you have any pictures, stories, memories, or items from or about Hyde and you would like to share them here with other like minded Hydonians please get in touch with us. Either leave us a comment or even better email us:
Tom, Dave, Paul and I would like to say thank you to everyone for contributing to this blog in some small way - even if that means just reading it! It's been more of a success than we could ever have dreamt of and that's all down to you ! It was our intention to get Hyde "on the record" as it were and it seems to be heading in the right direction. We are very proud of Hyde and would like it's history to live on!
