I have a lot of memories from my time at Hyde Grammar School if I am honest not all happy but I do remember that looking back, Mr Chappell was a kind dedicated enthusiastic teacher I think he might of been newly qualified thus the form photograph which I think he organised himself

If my memory is correct the then current government announced the closure of Grammar Schools in the mid 70s and Hyde County Grammar School was gradually closed to new intakes from around that time and eventually became Clarendon Rd Sixth Form College although I may be wrong about some of the latter details, I had left the school and the area in my 5th year at the school around 1978

I am a regular visitor to Hyde and Gee Cross visiting my nan (she is 93 and still sharp as a tack) I was amazed to see the old sports field and tennis courts are now home to the Police station

Hi Everybody!

By sheer chance, I landed on your home page and found myself staring at myself at the photo of the boys in Form 1x of 1973 at Hyde Grammar!

I still have that original photo here at home in Munich, Germany where my wife and I have lived since 1980.

I have often wondered what has happened to these boys and if any of them should see this mail of mine then I enclose my e-mail address to which they can write at any time: all mails would be very welcome.

Many thanks to the people responsible for posting and I really look forward to hearing from any of the boys of this Form 1x.

Gee Cross Methodist

Gee Cross Methodist Church was founded in 1882.

Gee Cross Social And Sports Club

3 - 5, King Edward Road, Gee Cross

I think this was taken in the late 1980's when the club was doing quite well. 

I have had a few good nights in here and attended a wake or two. It was such a busy place at one time. Saturdays always sounded great when I walked by - there was always much singing and merriment until late :)  They used to have some decent acts on there, too.

I heard it had been sold and plans were in place to rejuvenate it though I should imagine that the plans will include knocking it down and building more houses on the spot.

Another sad loss to Gee Cross.

I wish the cafe and restaurant were still there.  It used to be nice to stop off there when you were out for a walk over the Low.

It is easy to forget that what is now the restaurant, used to be the stables !.

I must admit I quite liked the look of it back then.... even though I was barred. :)

The Werneth Hotel And Treacle Brow

Another pub looking like it's destined to close its doors for the last time. 

Very sad if it happens as it used to be a very busy pub indeed.

Open top bus parade on Saturday 5th May

To give people notice incase they want to cheer on our team of champions, Hyde FC... there's an extra post today. :)

Blue Square Bet North champions Hyde FC will take part in an open top bus parade from Ewen Fields to the town hall on Saturday evening, prior to the player of the year awards night.

 

Please spread the word about the parade and encourage your friends, family and local pubs to step outside and thank the players for an incredible season. 

The coach will leave the ground at 6.30pm and will take the following route:

Past the Gardeners Arms and up Lumn Road
Left at the Clarkes Arms
Up Stockport Road,
Past the Werneth
Through Gee Cross village
Down Stockport Road,
Past the Grapes Hotel,
Past the Cheshire Cheese and the Lamb Inn
Right onto Dowson Road
Down Market Street,
Past the Shepherds Call and the Last Orders...

The Tigers will then arrive at the town hall at 7pm for a civic reception with the mayor. Doors for supporters attending the player of the year awards night will open half an hour later. Tickets for the awards night are priced at just £15 and guarantee a seat and a hot meal, as well as entertainment including a band and a DJ. Club photographer Paul Prole will also be in attendance to capture what promises to be a very special evening. Only a handful of places remain, so supporters should reserve their tickets for this once-in-a-lifetime event at the earliest opportunity by calling 0161 366 6874 or 07940 736378. Please note that smart dress must be worn.

Missing Pictures

Certain pictures on the site are not showing up... they will be back on or after the 7th on May.  All the pictures we show need to be stored on line... we have a number of places to do this and one such place as over used it's band-width.  I'm looking at a cost effective way round this.

Walter H Renwick

One of our recent emails contained this picture of Walter H. Renwick who was, for many years, a very well respected headmaster of Leigh Street School. The picture was sent to us by his grandson Robin Morgan, who was only17 when his grandfather died. 

Unfortunately, a great deal of Mr Renwicks papers and pictures from school were destroyed. He has quite a bit on other aspects of his grandfather life, but if you have pictures or other documents, or just memories of Mr Renwick, he would love to see them.  Robin says he thinks his grandfather would love the idea of being included in the Leigh Street part of our blog, as Leigh Street was very much the happiest time of his grandfathers life.

Olympic Swimming Trials 1912

Olympic trials being held in May 1912 at the Queen Adelaide reservoir, Gee Cross. Hyde swimmers Wilkinson, Dean and Wildgoose took part.

The coal strike in 1912 meant that the baths were closed four days a week at the beginning of the season. This affected Wilkinson, Dean, and Wildgoose who had been selected for Olympic trials. They did their training in the Queen Adelaide reservoir, Gee Cross, where the Olympic trials were to be held on June 1st. On the day of the trials the water in the reservoir was only 50 degrees. Both Dean and Forsyth succumbed to the cold and so were not selected. George Wilkinson was selected as Left Forward and Captain. Aged 33 he had already represented England 16 times and was the only player Continentals feared. Henry, aged 27, was selected for 400 and 1500 metres and William Foster for the 400 metres. When the Olympic team left for Stockholm on June 29th, Hyde Seal sent more representatives than any other club in the country.

After preparing for water of 50 degrees in Stockholm, the swimmers were surprised to find water of 70 degrees. It proved too hot for Henry Taylor who had to retire in the 1500 metres. Foster swam well and qualified for the final of his event. In the Water Polo final George Wilkinson led the Great Britain team to a 7-5 victory over Belgium.

George Street

George Street's location was from it's starting point at Edward St, (at this point it was known as George Street West), then crossing Rochfort St, Catherine St, Elizabeth St, Newton St, Clarendon St, Hamnett St and finally ending at Hoviley Brow.

During it's life George Street was one of the longest streets in Hyde and at various periods boasted around 12 public houses, the exact location of some of them cannot be ascertained:-

Spinners Arms
Star Inn
Black Horse
Blue Pig
Boars Head
Carpenters Arms
Dog and Partridge
Railway Tavern
Royal Hotel
Sun Inn
Woodman Inn

At the bottom end of George St was a large factory known in the early days as Brookside Hat Works, later taken over by Oldham & Fogg , Felt hat makers and then by Northide ltd who made protective clothing.

In 1833 a small chapel was built on George st for the "Methodist New Connexion" church. This was later substantially enlarged incorporating school premises and a small burial ground in 1858. The name of the church was changed in 1907 to the United Methodist Church.

George Street was virtually eliminated when the new motorway was constructed in the late 1970's. I say virtually because you can still walk on a part of what was George Street West. If you go down Edward Street, near the railway bridge on Manchester Road, the area at the very bottom, approx the width of the road square, was part of George Street West.

Hare And Hounds

When these were taken I should think that Walter Mansfield would have been in charge.... and when I say in charge, that goes for the customers as well. 
There was no smooching when Walter was around... and if caught couples could expect a warning over the P.A. system.
