Spring Street (2)

Recently we did a post about Spring Street which was in the "disappeared streets" series. We were lucky enough to get a picture of it off Barry who follows our Hyde Blog. Here is another one sent to us from Barry.

Photobucket

This one shows Barrys sister Delia and younger brother Stephen. They are standing outside number 9 Spring Street where the family grew up. It was taken circa 1960. In the background, with the white window, is Tom Smiths Chippy which stood on Cheapside. Sadly ,there aren't many old style chippys left in Hyde.

Many thanks once again to Barry for allowing us a glimpse of his past.

I used to live in Heaton Street in Denton where we had street lights similar to this which were originally lit by gas. They had arms at the top presumably so that a ladder could be leaned against it to allow access to the light, and some kid or other would frequently shin up the lamppost to tie a rope to the arm to use as a swing.

Dave I remember some of the last gas lamps around Apethorn Lane, Gee Cross... one was near to the train lines past Thistley Fields Cottages there was one or two near to Gibraltar Row, and the aquaduct. One outside of the lodge of Gee Cross Mill and another at the bottom off the hill at the start of Cheetham Fold Road as you turned off Apethorn Lane...
I played on many such swings as a child on Cheetham Fold and we threw the odd bike tire on the arms of the lamppost... I remember my brother throwing a bike tire and it was like a hoopla hoop and fell perfectly around the base... he was very pleased at that. We used the base of lampposts as cricket stumps at times. I wonder if all that would be classed as Anti Social Behaviour now and we'd all be on Asbo's... ha!

The new houses that have been built on the site of Fernbank Farm (Raymonds Farm)on Stockport Road have these "old style" lamps on the street - a nice touch to what is otherwise a very plain set of houses.

My Mum & Dad lived in Lewis street near there with my Gran and he used to have a lercher called Bruce that used to sit outside the chippy and wait for a portion of chips that my Dad paid for on the way home but my Dad found out the owner was only giving the dog scraps and sorted him out (or thats what I was told)

Every time I look at these 'disappeared streets' posts, I'm struck by how many homes & little communities much have been lost around Hyde over the years - a heck of a lot. Of course, new ones have popped up elsewhere to replace them, but it does make you look at Morrisons car park, the multi storey & the M67 et al and wonder what they would have looked like.

Great picture Nancy :>)

Hi Tom & Nancy
when I was about 12 years old, the school board man chased me, and I ended on the roof of Tom Smith's chip shop so he had to get my Mother out of work at Redfens rubber works to get me down Mother was not to pleased and ended up with a thick ear.Barry
