Disappeared Shops - Holts Butchers

The following two photos were sent to us by Jacqueline and Colin Ridgeway. They show some family of Jacquelines including her Grandfather Albert Ashley Holt who had a Butchers shop on Market Street in Hyde.

 

Albert was married to Margaret who was the daughter of Amos Winterbotham who had been the former Mayor of Hyde. The shop was supplied by his brother Fred Bennett Holt who also supplied many other butchers shops in the area due to him having Beef cattle and Pigs. 

The war more or less ruined the business for the Holts due to Alberts injuries and food rationing during and after the war. 

The shop later became CAPPERS who also sold tripe.
Albert Ashley Holt was Jacqueline Ridgways Grandfather. 
Fred Holt was Alberts older brother.

Gee Cross Fete 2013

It's that time of year again !! 

It is the 20th year of  the Gee Cross Fete and it is jointly organised by Willow Wood Hospice and the Rotary Club of Hyde to raise funds for both charities.  
Show your support for the local Charities and the great work they do by attending and having a great day out !

Has anyone got any photos of Hyde United playing in the 1970's ? 
I would also like some of any charity matches played in the 1970's especially the ones where Stuart Pearson and Alec Stepney (Manchester United) played.

Was this the longest Street in Hyde ??

George Street was always rumoured to be the longest Street in Hyde although I have recently been told that that honour goes to Apple Street. 

Does anybody know the answer ? 
George Street was certainly a contender .

Hyde United Centenary Match

Most people know about Hyde United's (then Hyde FC) claim to fame being  beaten 26-0 in the FA Cup by Preston in 1887 - It is still the biggest-ever defeat in English football !!

In 1988 there was a replay at Ewen Fields to mark the clubs centenary.
Here is a scan of the souvenir programme.
It notes Sam Allardyce (West Hams Manager) and Frank Worthington (former player of many professional clubs) as Preston Northend players.

Unfortunately, I cant remember the score if anyone out there can help,
please comment.

Flowery Field Junior School

in the late 1960's.
On the back row, 3rd from right, is my brother Adrian. On the row in front of him, 2nd from right, is his pal Kevin Barker from Hallbottom Street.

Oakfield Primary

This class photo was taken at Oakfield Primary School in 1963.
The teacher was Miss Jones, next to her, in the fourth row from
the front, is Steven Heginbotham. Third from left in that row is
myself, and at the far right of the row is Graeme Green.

Mrs Clegg was the Headmistress, she had previously been at 

St. Mary's School just up the road.

One of the most vivid memories I have of my time at Oakfield
is of the sickly smell of tobacco wafting over from Senior Service !

You will see from the attached that I am hoping to arrange a table top sale, on the Hyde Civic Square in late June.  The poster dose not say that there are a further 8 stales available to local groups, such as Morris dancers, etc, which will be free to the organisation, in exchange for a display or similar, which could be classed as entertainment for visitors.   Any one interested in any of the 48 stalls should contact me as soon as possible.   Could you assist by letting others know?

The Church is still thriving as the United Church, on Union Street in Hyde.
