The name "HYDE" is derived from the hide, a measure of land for taxation purposes, taken to be that area of land necessary to support a peasant family. In later times it was taken to be equivalent to 120 acres .

Bus Station Views (1990s)
Thanks go to Grant for these 3 pictures... The early 1990s does not seem that long ago but the area has changed since these were taken.
Hi Ian It dose look big... as for all the changes it as gone through I think the one we have now is the best. The building is a great design, I have found it to be cleaner and certainly warmer. The seating is welcome and of course it is a safer place now.
The bus station itself may be better now, but I don't like walking across the roadway there. I really have to stop and think because the buses effectively go the 'wrong way' round the central waiting area.
If you have any pictures, stories, memories, or items from or about Hyde and you would like to share them here with other like minded Hydonians please get in touch with us. Either leave us a comment or even better email us:
Tom, Dave, Paul and I would like to say thank you to everyone for contributing to this blog in some small way - even if that means just reading it! It's been more of a success than we could ever have dreamt of and that's all down to you ! It was our intention to get Hyde "on the record" as it were and it seems to be heading in the right direction. We are very proud of Hyde and would like it's history to live on!

Interesting pics Tom - the bus station looks vast!
The Doctors Surgeries have changed also.
Am guessing these were taken on a Sunday...it all looks a bit quiet.
