I have only heard the odd bit about Hyde Carnival and seen even less pictures , such as this... if you know more and have pictures, please let us know.

What a shame traditions such as this died out.
The riding of the "Black Knight" or "Blake Lad" was originally an Ashton custom, but was from time to time observed in Hyde. On Easter Mondays either someone dressed up or a rag stuffed guy would ride around the streets on horseback parodying the infamous Black Knight of Ashton Under Lyne.

That looks like the back of Elm Grove , behind Hyde Uniteds Ewen Fields !
I think you're right about it being Elm Grove, it seems to be on the land which is now between Hyde's ground (strictly speaking Hyde FC now - they dropped the 'United' bit because of the link up with Manchester City) and the Leisure Centre. If you look on Google Earth you can see that an extension - or even an extra house - has been built on the end of the row of terraced houses on Elm Grove nearest the camera.
