Here are some photos of Greenfield Street School when it was demolished - to make way for the new Asda store. (circa 2000)?They actually let me go round the school and take these pictures as it was a bank holiday and there was only the security onOne is the date stone off the front of the school, one is the huge bell tower off the top of the school and one is the upstairs corridor looking from the hall to the secretarys room .
What was wrong with the building and did we need another store in Hyde?
I know they found asbestos in the building but I think it was more a case of the school having no field nearby for the childrens sports activity - either that or money does indeed talk ,Jean!
hello hydonian and jean i think its a case of money talks as well because they also pulled the clinic down and the old municipal building with the bifg pillars down that was opposite greenfield school
Hi SteveGreat pictures.. I am glad you mentioned what else was lost along with these buildings.. the Municipal building you mentioned was a cracker... and these big pillars did make it look very important. If anyone as pictures of this building and the others mentioned please send them in.
i used to go to greenfield street school when i was a child and after leaving hyde for a number of years, was shocked when i came back and saw the school was gone.
I can well imagine the changes you must have seen... none more so than coming back to see what disappeared in the making of Adsa... apart from the motor way I can't think of such a change in my life time.
wow thats memeories i use to go to this primary school late 80's early 90's great memories.
When i was at greeny the houses were called,Green,Field,School,Hyde.I think the tall blonde teacher was Mr phil Keates.there are a lot of photos and info on Leigh st and greeny on friends reunited.Brooks iron mongers warehouse was also demolished for asda. For my self i feel Hyde has lost a lot of its history in my life time.Aspland hospital where i was born has gone, Leigh st and greenfield st also gone.does anyone remember the Kingston stink?I got my first proper racer from Duckworths it was an orange Eddy Mercs i rode it every where.
Hi there Anon:Yes I certainly do remember the Kingston Stink... if I can find a picture or adverts I'll do a post on it.. thank you for commenting.
