I know a name of two that's mentioned above... Jack Souter, we used to share the odd joke or two if it's the same chap... I think he lived in Gee Cross. Would Brian Hurst have been the one who had a paper shop on Stockpot Road?.. and Tommy Slater rings a bell.. ..
Jack is certainly the same chap I suppose he was wearing the hat for a laugh. It is a different Brian this one now lives around the Boston Street area.
I think Jack was in the building trade.... a Brickie if my memory serves me right... I could always tell he was about by his laugh... and of course his voice.
The Tommy Slater I knew was from Ashton Road Newton, but he had a son called Tommy... I bet there's many a 'morning drive' picture in the back of draws... Do you know where the group were from? or where they got to?
I went to Blackpool with the Cheshire Cheese many moons ago, Albert Pangburn was there.. I think he was still the landlord of the Shepherds Call at the time.. Albert took it amongst himself to tell everyone we had to be back at the coach by a certain time... or the coach would leave... no waiting he said. It was Alberts son-in-law Roy Wibbererley who was the driver... we all got back to the coach in time apart from two.... that was Albert and Jim Cuthbert who was the landlord of the Cheshire Cheese.... Roy was true to his father-in-laws words and departed on time leaving Albert and Jim who I believe got a taxi home from Blackpool. Another thing which I have never forgot from that trip was how Mick Travis slept lying on the backs on the coach seats... I know many a pint had been drunk... but I would not have believed it if I'd not seen it myself... ha! happy days.
Jack worked for the council.
The morning drive was from either The Clarkes or The Ring O Bells it was around 1960.
I remember Albert and Jim and had a chuckle about them getting left behind the same thing happened to my dad and Ernie Knowles but they were stranded in Nottingham having been to the goose fair, that was in the early 50s.

Tommy Slater was the brother of Olwyn Slater,my mothers'friend and our neighbour.Tommy was also our coalman, and him and Olwyn lived on Mansfield Road next to the Memorys.
The nightingales lived further up the road, and the daughter,Christine is in the above school photo. She used to take me and my sister swimming when we were kids.
Hi John
Thank you for the information... Tommy would not be the chap I knew then.. but nice to know where they lived and how fondly the are mentioned here.
Billy nightingale was a good friend of my uncle.Keith (Hopkinson),and they used to drink together. He knew Billy as "Billy Shirt".....Nightingale,nightshirt....shirt for short!!!
John that's excellent...
I should do a posting on nick names from around Hyde... I could not possible put down in writing some of the names I've been known by... ha!
I was born and lived on Mansfield Road till I was 21.We had some good days there in the 50's.I remember Bill being nicknamed *nightshirt* but do not know why, Chris [Bills sister] was my then best friend and she still is today.
I have two more photo of the same morning drive one outside a pub and one at the front of a coach. My Dad and my Brother are on the one that Jean sent in. Its so nice that people still remember them and me taking John and his sister Lynn swimming at the old Hyde baths. This blog is bringing back a lot of good memories for a lot of people - keep up the good work.
Hi Jean and Ceecee
Thank you again for your comments on this post.. feel free to keep them going...
Ceecee when Nancy and I started this blog we had no idea how it would go... we of cousre 'hope' it would be well received... we had no way of knowing it would take off so well.. We have now been visited by 97 Country's by over 18,000 unique visitors... we have had over 400 'new' visitors in a day.. OK! not all will come back but we know that many do.. Both Nancy and I and of course now Dave and Paul are well pleased with how things have turned out... I feel that our success is down to how people such as yourselves join in, we depend on the pictures, and information that is sent in.. Anything that can get folks talking and sharing stories is always a bonus.
