A Home from Home.

Today we have some photos of the chalets on Werneth Low. sadly most of them are in a dilapitated state now. 

 

I have a feeling they may have been posted before but we were recently asked about them and I thought it would be a  great opportunity to ask our readers if they had any experiences with either owning or holidaying in any of them. 

All I know is that the father of a friend of mine used to be lucky enough to own one and they used to spend weekends "camping" out in them. No televisions, radios or distraction - just fresh air and plenty of imagination for the children...

I bet they slept well !

Also, if anyone has any idea when they were built that would be helpful too. Thanks.

Gerrards, Gee Cross

"As a youngster during the War, a favourite place to play was Pole Bank and between exploring in the woods and playing Cricket or Football on the paddock [until the groundsman threw us off] we had a great time. 

On the way home, we would turn left outside Pole Bank and I remember a setback row of old cottages and then Bagshaw's farm then another row of cottages that came out to the sidewalk and at the end of this row was a tower. I came across this photo the other day in a book and it brought memories flooding back. This was our "Haunted House". At that time is was in disrepair and nothing like the photo here but, you could go inside and climb the stairs and look out of the upstairs windows. For some reason it seemed to us as the scariest place around and we were convinced it was haunted. Even though we were scared to death to go inside, somehow kids were, and probably still are, wanting to get scared, perhaps because we knew that however scared we were, we always got safely home for our dinner. 

The caption on the photo says that it was built by the Ashtons and was a clock tower to help their employees get to work on time.There was an inscription around the clock face "Whilst thou lookest I fly".... "

"The photo was taken by me in, I would guess 1993-ish, from King Edward Road next to the Labour Club.  I love the view here of the rise up to the Werneth, then Treacle Brow and to Holy Trinity Church at the top.  Also interesting is the height of the wall from behind Arch Joinery up to Stockport Road.  In my young days this site was occupied by Moore's who I think were leather dressers or something like that.  I know it also as Whittaker's Whim. .. "

The Singing Street !

The following was sent to us via email...

Over to Janet....

" I posted a comment last October about Trevor Grimshaw and having a signed copy of the Singing Street, you replied asking if I could scan a copy of the cover. I've attached a copy of the cover and the inside front cover which is signed by both Trevor and Mike Harding. In my comment I said it was an exhibition in Hyde but thinking back I'm pretty sure it was in Stalybridge Town Hall and we all went to Stalybridge Station Bar - a favourite of Trevor's - for drinks afterwards. He was exhibiting his 'scenes from a train window' - I think that's what he called it. It was a series of drawings which, although, independent pieces when displayed next to each other were sequential and represented the view from each window of a train carriage. It was around the time when he did the opening credits for the television series on rail journeys..."





A great book and how lucky to have a signed copy !

Postcard from a bygone era.

Today we have a postcard of Hyde Hospital .

A couple of years ago it was supposed to be earmarked for demolition and the building of new houses on the site. Does anyone know what happened to the proposals?

"Some excellent pics of the above were posted some weeks ago by, I think by Mr Graham Sharp?

To add to this current interest here are a few  more taken again by my Pater  between 1951  & 53...as is in this case when I'm unsure I usually say 1952...but then I'm always open to correction!

Shown in these pics is the line running up to Sheffield and already, as can be seen, it has  been (recently) electrified which may well date all of the pics.   Pic 1: I recall on the rail track running right alongside the brick wall there of Daniel Adamson's their own  company steam engine, the brightly coloured (green?)  Little Enoch.

The final epic shows my Uncle Frank (Roe) who was the porter on Hyde Junction...and this was much to his little nephew's chagrin who by that time was a budding little train spotter and in the company of an older boy would start the journey to spot trains, don't tell Mother, on  London Road  Station,  Manchester from the not so convenient Hyde Central...my hiding  under carriage seats when when old push-and-pull pulled into Hyde Junction...the strapped pulling open the door by Uncle standing there my I seeing only his dark uniformed legs...an indelibly etched memory daring do..."

Another sad day !

Below is the latest Hyde pub casualty.
Sadly, the Ring 'o' Bells on Stockport Road has pulled its last pint.
There will be no pubs left in Hyde at this rate !
