 David Barlow has sent us this interesting document

Couple of documents highlighting Pole Banks history and the fragmentation of the Thomas Beeley Estate following his death in 1908 and subsequent auction in 1912 after which I believe Pole Bank Hall was then leased for 7 years to Thomas Kerfoot.

The Hall and Grounds were purchased in 1920 by George Frederick Byrom for £4200. George Byrom died in 1942 and in 1946 in accordance with his will and wishes Pole Bank Hall and Grounds were bequeathed to the Corporation of Hyde for the use and recreation of the general public.

Then...and now !

The site of Hyde Mill (or Pattreioux or Senior Service as it was commonly known), in Newton before it was demolished in 2009/10 ..



Now you see it...



...and now you don't.

I still think they should have kept the tower as part of the housing estate as it was a very well known landmark and would have given a bit of character to the place.

Swan Welding.

I came across this on Ebay yesterday. It is an old letter sent by by Swan Welding Company who used to stand on Crook Street.
If anyone knows the exact site of the business, please let us know so we can pinpoint it on the map .

Aeriel View from Gee Cross Mill

 The following was sent to us via David Barlow

"This might be of interest to you Hydonians.....Early 1980's panoramic  picture of  Cross Cliffe and Daisy Bank cottages at the bottom of Apethorn Lane. The picture was taken from the top of the now demolished Gee Cross Mill.  Across the fields and in the distance you can just make out Pole Bank Hall. "

Ash Tree and Birches Farms

Ash Tree and Birches Farms are situated on a small road between Werneth Low Road and Lord Derby Road. On the easterly side is Ash Tree farm whilst that on the west side is Birches Farm. Birch Farm was originally known as "Lousy Thorn". In the 1830's, Samuel Taylor was the farmer at "Lousy Thorn". He was an important witness at the trial of the murderers of Thomas Ashton, for he saw them pass across his fields on the way to commit the crime. his son William was also a witness at the trial being the man who discovered the murdered victim.
William Taylor's daughter married the Rev Julius Benn, and became the mother of Sir John Williams Benn, MP and the grandmother of the Rt Hon Capt J. Wedgewood Benn MP, Secretary of State for India 1929-31. (probably relatives of the Anthony Wedgewood Benn MP).
The farms probably date back to the 1700's, if anyone has any further info please let us know.

Green End Farm

The following description comes from the History Of Hyde.
I don't know of any photos that exist of this farm.

"Green End Farm, a picturesque old place, stood in Grafton Street, and part of it's land sloped steeply into Wilson Brook...."

A 1970's aeriel view shows the area the farm stood in to the top right. George Street runs along the bottom whilst Newton Street (pre motorway) goes from top to bottom.

St Georges addition

It shows the present  St Georges school being built prior to the demolition of the old school building.




The new building was built in 1978.

St George's School

In June this year we showed some drawings and photographs of the old St George's School. When I was at St George's during the National Heritage Weekend in September there was a souvenir booklet on display about a reunion of scholars on 15 September 1906.

I photographed a couple of pages in this booklet which show two more photographs of the school and expand the information I gave in the previous post.

What a sad sight to see.

North Cheshire Herald/Tameside Reporter

The Tameside Reporter 'died' for a short time after the issue of 13th September 2012, but was resurrected on 25th October 2012. The 'North Cheshire Herald & Hyde & Glossop General Advertiser' as it was then named was founded in 1853 by George Booth, and Gerald England in his 'Old Hyde' blog on 4th April 2008 showed a photograph of the offices of the newspaper as they were in 1910. I wonder what George Booth would have made of the recent trials and tribulations?

In Hyde cemetery, close to where the chapel which was demolished earlier this year was situated, is this gravestone:

George Booth died in 1863 at the age of only 46, just ten years after founding the 'North Cheshire Herald'. His wife had died thirteen years earlier at the age of only 34. It looks as if his son-in-law Robert Higham took over the running of the newspaper on the death of George Booth as the inscription on the left-hand side of the one above shows:

Robert Higham died in 1905 having served as editor and joint proprietor of the newspaper for 'upwards of 40 years' and George Booth's daughter outlived her husband by nearly twelve years, dying in 1916.

The old Zion Congregational Church building

What an imposing building it was in its day !
