I've had quite a few drinks in here, and seen one or two good acts on the stage... At one time I would drop my uncle Bert and Auntie Doris off here then call back for them later... the ride home was funny... both Doris and Burt laughing and telling me about the acts.. and who had won the bingo..
Ian: I wonder if it's still going Ian... Hopefully we can get a picture of it.. we intend getting round to posting about all the pubs we can, and of course clubs... we don't know information or story's about them all but it might bring a smile to some Hydonian who as moved away who sees the post and in brings back memories. Stewart: We have a few still going, one club which I really must show is the local 'Time Tunnel' as it is known, it is just around the corner from my house and it was like stepping back in time 25+ years ago when I first moved to this part of town and I think it still is the same now. At weekends it still seems to get a good few in.... I know there is bingo and such during the week and such like. It's one of those places were the regular's like to sit in the same seats..
I remember this club very well, my parents Keith n Joyce Harrison were once the steward n stewardess, the organist was a man i know as Norman n his wife was called Joan, they used to live on Richmond Street, sadly they both died together in their home ov carbon monoxide poisoning a good few yrs ago, my mum has a picture ov her n my dad behind the bar taken in 1973/4, I had many a good nyt sat with the locals at wknds xoxo
Ian: Cheers for that.. would make getting a picture all the better now its gone... one for use to look out for. Lindsey: Hi there Lindsey Thanks for this information... we'd be more than pleased to include the picture you mention... and anything else from around Hyde... and it is input like yours that helps keep the interest going...

I also had the pleasure to be on the committe with my Dad.Brother, uncles, and cousins.....lol ....to many Worthys in this club lol... 20 years ago i was steward behind the bar and how i am thinking where does time go,it certainly doesn't wait for any one...pity.. i remember all the old friends and and family who aren't here anymore, hope they are all having a quick half somewhere better.... thanks Nancy
Hi Darren , good to see you on here. Thanks for the feedback. We always knew the back Lane Club as "Worthys" club due to the masses of Worthingtons that went in/ran the club. Have you any photos that we could add to this post?
This as been a great posting Nancy made all the better by the comments here... I do hope Lindsey and Darren have pictures to share.... I wonder if it would be possible to find out how the club started and by whom.. and of course when.
I have just been reading the poetry book, Gleams of Sunshine by Hyde poet James Leigh it gives his address as 40 Ridling Lane, just around the corner from the above club. The book was published in 1904... I had not noticed before, but in the list of subscribers is the Back Lane Working Mans Club Hyde. So the club was going before the book was published in 1904.
I didn't know that Back Lane was at the other end of Lumn Road until the recent post on here. Would the club originally have been on Back Lane then. There is an old building up there behind the Clarke's Arms and overlooking the railway - I've always wondered what it was. Have just posted a photo of WMC on Geograph.
I think the road Lumn Road, came later Gerald... Maybe there was a "back Lane" that led down towards Lumn farm.. and when housing and such was built the was called after the old farmstead. I found out just lately that Victoria Road was once known as 'Back Lane'...

Neat post Tom.
We don't have clubs like this over here in our town. Maybe it is because we are too small.
No it's long gone unfortunately Tom - converted into houses (High Street, the top 3 white cottages).
