Hyde Name Origins.

The name "HYDE" is derived from the hide, a measure of land for taxation purposes, taken to be that area of land necessary to support a peasant family. In later times it was taken to be equivalent to 120 acres .

These photo's need no explanation.

Photobucket

Woolworths closed its doors to the public for the last time somewhere between 27th December 2008 and 6th January 2009.

Sadly missed (well the pick 'n' mix counter is anyway )!

Woolworths opened in Hyde in what was formerly Brownsons store.

I think the 'Pick and Mix' was excellent... and the shop itself was very good... I grew up with it and was sad to see it go.

Who remembers the salted peanuts? The nuts were roasting under a light and when you bought some the grease which soaked through the bag was unbelievable. I liked the light bulb counted where bulbs were sold individually and tested in a socket at the back of the counter by the assistant. Good old Woollies.
