Hyde Name Origins.

The name "HYDE" is derived from the hide, a measure of land for taxation purposes, taken to be that area of land necessary to support a peasant family. In later times it was taken to be equivalent to 120 acres .

How lovely this is and timely for me. My late father, whose birthday would have been tomorrow, lived and breathed Hyde United. One of the last things he said to me, from his bed at Stockport Infirmary, was "How's Hyde gone on?" I had no idea but told him they'd won! He would have been at the Mossley match on that day.

How lovely too seeing the old adverts for shops long gone. Good memories - thanks Tom for sharing them, and for all the good stuff which appears on this site.

Being 120 miles away, I'm thinking of the good folk of Hyde and Hattersley tonight. Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.
