Barry in Oz here, My Dad worked at 'Rexine' for donkeys years. Most locals called it 'The Rexine' instead of ICI. As a kid I used to stand at the corner of Cartwright St and Talbot Rd with my Guy Fawkes in an old pram waiting for the day shift to finish, gee I used to get a lot of coins for my fireworks.
Good old times there Barry.... my oldest brother Harold worked in the offices at ICI after he left the Grammar School, My brother John worked at North's for a while in 'The Dip' and I spent some time at The Dairy. We rarely see a Milkman now, and it's years since I've seen a milk-float.
I worked in the laboratory at the Dairy, dad,Arnold Davies, was chief engineer, uncle, Alan Davies was in the gagage, his size 12 feet were greatly valued when changing tyres as in those days you used both feet and two crow bars, no fancy machinery then. My Aunt, Edith Newman, was in the wages section until her retirement. The general handyman, Noel Stafford, was a legendary figure. One could write a book about his talents and exploits. Once again Blog, thanks for the memories.Dave Davies
Barry in Oz again. Strewth, I failed to notice United Dairys. My Mum worked as a sales lady for them for years, got a nice little pension from them when she finished. She loved working for them. An old workmate of mine, Brian Smith, used to deliver milk on the floats before he went on the Vans at Walls.
I enjoyed my time at the Dairy... at the time it was a good place to work, and the wages were quite reasonable.. I worked in the Pasteurised Department.... we worked until the next days milk was finished... which meant we always got home a couple of hours early... very very rare if we had to work later than 4 o-clock... The daft thing was that when the machines used to be stripped down for a good clean.. this was always done in over time. If we had finished work at 2, we had to hang around until 4, so we could start over time.. We got 1 day off a week, Monday one week Tuesday the next... which meant we had one weekend off in 6. I worked Christmas Day morning one year... triple time and a day off in lieu.. I was home for 12-30.. All in all a good place to work.
