As Hyde Market is in the process of undergoing renewal I thought a few pictures of the market through the ages might remind us of how it has changed.
In the 1920's. The Norfolk Arms pub is on the right hand side.

I hope they aren't intending to destroy the bus shelter. It has stood there for the whole of my life and to me it represents going home because that was where I would stand in all weathers to catch the bus to Gee Cross. It's pseudo-Victorian and I love it so, Council, hands off!!
The shelter is a gradeII listed building so there is no intention to replace it. So long as they don't overprice the rents the new market should be OK.
Barry in Oz, I was here in 2010, what are they doing to the place ? After growing up around the market from the 1950s onwards I thought the current one is but a shadow of what it was.
Thanks Gerald for that reassurance. I don't understand why there is a need to spend such an exhorbitant amount of money on the re-vamping of the town centre. It appears perfectly adequate to me. If there's a pot of money available it needs to be spent on the regeneration of Market Street which is run down and shabby.
I fully agree with Werneth Low,
I drove up Market Steet two weeks ago after being away for a while and it is an absolute disgrace.
Tameside council should be shot for allowing it to become such an eyesore,i was shamed before my children as i told them that this was the main street in the town where i grew up,they were appalled too.Tameside council-SORT IT OUT!!
Tom,couldn't find the time to meet in the sheps, hopefully next time.Keep up the good work.
I think we are all in agreement about Hyde Lane and how it is... far to many take-aways..
I wonder what the town will be like when the new tesco's opens in Hattersley..
As for a drink in the Sheps, I'd have had to give that a miss this week as not been firing on all cylinders this week.. :O)
Tom, you are far too young to be calling Market Street Hyde Lane! My parents, born in the early 1900s used to call it that. Some people reading may not know where you're talking about. Can you feel a post on Market Street v Hyde Lane coming on?
I'll except I'm to young... :O) I don't think I'm ever heard Nancy refer to it as anything thing else... we just have old fashioned values ha!
Hyde lane it is then!!!!!
Thats how i always say it,get it from me mum, even though i called it market street.!
